Function requirements, general
^ Circuit status: circuit 30 ON
^ The Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) is switched on, authorized and operating error-free
^ No fault with global positioning system (GPS) antenna system
Navigation mode, general
The navigation module is integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The navigation system includes these functions:
- Position finding
- Route planning, route calculation and destination-oriented navigation
- Visual driving instructions in form of pictograms
- Intersection zoo
- Acoustic driving recommendations
- Display of navigation maps
The location of the vehicle as well as the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation module after entering the following information:
- "Country" (without code (ZU8) USA version) or "State" (with code (ZU8) USA version)
- "Place name"
- "Street"
- "Intersection" or "House number"
- "Town centers"
- "ZIP code"
- "Point(s) of interest (POI)"
- "Destination entry on map"
After entering or calling up a destination location, route calculation starts. The route between the current vehicle position and the destination is calculated. The following computer models can be selected:
- "Avoid freeway"
- "Avoid ferries or car trains"
- "Avoid tunnels"
Moreover, additional route options can be selected on vehicles without code (ZU8) USA version:
- "Quickest route"
- "Shortest route"
- "Dynamic route"
- "Avoid toll road"
- "Avoid roads requiring toll stickers"
The submenus "In vicinity of destination", "Location vicinity", "Vicinity of other locations" and "Search with name and number" are supported in the "From Points of Interest (POI)" menu. After entering or calling up a destination location, route calculation starts.
POI categories are, e.g.:
- Junctions
- Highway service
- Airport
- Hotel or motel
- Parking lot
- Restaurant
Further subfunctions are described in separate documents:
^ Position finding and destination-oriented navigation
^ Route guidance through voice output
^ Display compass
Operating instructions
The navigation mode function can be controlled with the following components:
- Control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
Function sequence for navigation mode
When entered using the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the control signals are processed within the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The voice input takes place via the hands-free system microphone group. The words spoken are converted into an electrical signal by the hands-free system microphone group and routed to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via a direct line.
The data entered for reaching the destination (navigation) is calculated via the navigation module integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The route is calculated according to the options set. If observance of the options is not possible, then the options set are ignored for the sections in question and a message is displayed and signaled audibly. The configured criteria and options can be displayed and changed. After calculation, the route is shown on the map in the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and by arrow pictograms in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster. An acoustic announcement is also made, saying "The route is calculated".
If the vehicle is no longer moving on the pre-calculated route, then the route is recalculated. If the recalculated values are plausible for the navigation module, then the modified route is displayed.
The signals for displaying the arrow pictograms in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster are forwarded by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the instrument cluster via interior CAN.
Dynamic route guidance (without code (ZU8) USA version):
During dynamic route guidance, an alternative route is calculated automatically if there is a traffic jam or road block along the calculated route.
