Display compass function, general
The driver uses the Display compass function for orientation purposes, e.g. off-road. The driver is shown the following information on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
- Currently set steering angle (wheel position) of the front axle
- Current direction of travel shown on the compass with cardinal points on a rotating disk and a compass needle (the red tip of the compass needle always points north)
- Exact altitude (in meters) above average seal level
- Altitude (in meters) above average seal level in the form of a scale
- Current vehicle position in latitudinal coordinates
- Number of currently receivable Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites
- Current vehicle position in longitudinal coordinates
- Function bar with "Back" option
For the Display compass function, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit requires the following signals:
- GPS signals from the left front GPS antenna
- Steering angle signals from steering angle sensor
Display of the current direction of travel on the compass with cardinal points is also possible without GPS signals being received, since a gyro sensor which allows the cardinal compass points to be displayed without GPS reception is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The Display compass function comprises the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence for reception of GPS signals
^ Function sequence for steering angle signal reception
^ Function sequence for compass display

Operating instructions
The Display compass function can only be selected on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit by selecting the following menus in the specified sequence using the buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
- 1. Menu "Navigation"
- 2. Menu item "Position" in function bar
- 3. Submenu item "Compass"

Function sequence for reception of GPS signals
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit receives the GPS signals from the GPS satellites via the following path:
- Left front GPS antenna
- Direct line
- Antenna splitter
- Direct line
Using the received GPS signals and the signals received from the gyro sensor integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit generates the visual information to be shown on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Function sequence for steering angle signal reception
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit receives the steering angle signals from the steering angle sensor via the following path:
- Steering column tube module
- Interior CAN
Using the received steering angle signals, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit generates the visual information shown on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller.

Function sequence for compass display
The Display compass function can only be selected on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit by selecting the following menus using the buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
- 1. Menu "Navigation"
- 2. Menu item "Position" in function bar
- 3. Submenu item "Compass"
The control signals from the buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally. The visual information shown on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is also generated internally.
