Automatic interior lights control in general
The automatic interior lights control independently controls the interior illumination upon opening a door, unlocking the central locking or switching off the ignition. When opening a door, the actuation of the corresponding entrance/exit illumination is also performed.
The corresponding requests are generated automatically.
The master control unit for the automatic interior lights control is the overhead control panel control unit.
The automatic interior lights control feature consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Locator lighting function sequence
^ Function sequence for entrance and exit illumination
^ Function sequence for load compartment illumination
^ Function sequence for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm (with code (FZ5) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))

Additional function requirements for locator lighting
^ Dome lamp switch in the automatic interior lights position
^ Automatic light switch daylight sensor indicates "darkness"

Locator lighting function sequence
The following signals are read in and evaluated by the overhead control panel control unit for controlling the locator lighting:
- Door contact switch status
- Automatic light switch daylight sensor status
- Status of the central locking (CL [ZV])
- Circuit 15 ON/OFF
The status of the left front door contact switch, the right front door contact switch, the left rear door contact switch, the right rear door contact switch and the rear-end door contact switch is read in by the rear SAM and sent via interior CAN.
The overhead control panel control unit evaluates all incoming information and actuates the following interior illumination components:
- front dome lamp (N70e1)
- Dome lamp
- Left rear reading lamp and right rear reading lamp
- Rear interior lamp (E15/3e3) (in model 463.236/237/270/271/341/346)
The power supply of the rear dome lamp is performed via the rear SAM.
The front dome lamp, the dome lamp, the left rear reading lamp, the right rear reading lamp and the rear interior lamp are switched on and off in a dimmed state.
The following components are actuated by the front SAM:
- Left/right front footwell lamp
- Left/right rear footwell lamp
If all vehicle doors are closed and if the EZS control unit has provided the circuit status circuit 15 ON via the interior CAN, the interior illumination is then switched off.
Upon request of the function by actuating the CL [ZV] via the transmitter key (A8/1), the locator lighting is controlled as follows:
- The interior illumination is switched off after t = 3 s after the vehicle is locked.
- After the last vehicle door is closed, the locator lighting is switched off with circuit 15 OFF after t = 8 s and with circuit 15 ON immediately.
- The interior illumination is switched off after t = 5 min after the last door is opened if all vehicle doors are not closed again.
- The interior illumination is switched off after t = 30 s if a vehicle door is not opened after unlocking the vehicle.
All automatic functions are aborted by manually switching on the interior illumination.

Additional function requirements for entrance and exit illumination
^ Dome lamp switch in the automatic interior lights position
^ Opening a vehicle door

Function sequence for entrance and exit illumination
The following signals are read in by the rear SAM and sent via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit to control the entrance/exit illumination:
- Left front door contact switch status
- Right front door contact switch status
- Left rear door contact switch status
- Right rear door contact switch status
The opening of a vehicle door is defined by the status of the door contact switch.
The overhead control panel control unit evaluates this information and sends the switch-on request for the entrance/exit illumination via interior CAN to the following control units:
- Door control module front left
- Door control module front right
- Door control module rear left
- Door control module rear right
The following components of the entry/exit illumination are actuated corresponding to the door status:
- Left front door entrance/exit lamp by the left front door control unit
- Right front door entrance/exit lamp by the right front door control unit
- Left front door entrance luminescent film via the left front door contact switch
- Right front door entrance luminescent film via the right front door contact switch
Furthermore, the following components are actuated according to the door status on model 463.236/237/270/271/341:
- Left rear door entrance/exit lamp by the left rear door control unit
- Right rear door entrance/exit lamp by the right rear door control unit
- Left rear door luminescent film via the left rear door contact switch
- Right rear door luminescent film via the right rear door contact switch
The luminescent films are switched on independent of the day/ night signal of the automatic light switch daylight sensor. The duty cycle with opened door is t = 15 min.

Additional load compartment illumination function requirements
^ Dome lamp switch in the automatic interior lights position
^ Rear-end door open

Function sequence for load compartment illumination
To control the load compartment illumination, the status of the rear-end door contact switch is read in by the rear SAM.
The rear SAM actuates the right trunk lamp and the left trunk lamp in accordance with this status.
If the rear-end door remains open, the trunk lamps are automatically switched off in order to protect the battery (G1) with the circuit status circuit 15 OFF after t = 10 min have expired.

Additional function requirements for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm (with code (FZ5) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))
^ ATA [EDW] alarm activated

Function sequence for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm
The rear SAM control unit sends the "ATA [EDW] alarm triggered" signal via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit.
The overhead control panel control unit actuates the front dome lamp and the dome lamp. The rear SAM switches on the rear interior lamp upon request by the overhead control panel control unit.
The front dome lamp, the dome lamp and the rear interior lamp are switched on and off in a dimmed state.
