Location
The emergency tensioning retractor unit is integrated in the respective rear automatic belt retractors. They are located on the left and right C-pillar.

Task
The emergency tensioning retractor unit removes the seat belt slack in the event of a frontal impact or rear end collision and prevents the film reel effect of the seat belt from occurring.
The close-fitting seat belt means that vehicle occupants are subjected to the deceleration forces acting on the body at an earlier stage. Triggering is conducted by the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) igniting the emergency tensioning retractor squibs.
