Component Identification:

Location
The radio and navigation unit is located in the center of the instrument panel.

Task
^ Central operating and display unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle
^ Reads in the controls and input signals
^ Evaluation of input factors
^ Actuates output media

Central operating and display unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle
The radio and navigation unit provides the user with a structured and uniform user interface.

Reads in the controls and input signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
^ Direct line
^ Interior CAN (CAN B)
^ Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)

Direct line
The radio and navigation unit comes with the following direct connections:
- Wake-up for MOST (bi-directional)
- - AUX input 1 (access in glove compartment), without code ( 518) Media interface
- FM/AM/RRCL [FZV] antenna (A2/93a1) and GPS antenna (A2/93a6) in the roof antenna module (A2/93) and FM rear window antenna amplifier (A2/19)
- Bluetooth antenna (A2/91)
- Hands-free system microphone group (A67b1)

Interior CAN
The radio and navigation unit is a subscriber of the interior CAN; it communicates with the following control units, for example:
- Instrument cluster (A1)
- EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)
- Central gateway control unit (N93)

MOST
The radio and navigation unit is a subscriber of the MOST; it transmits and receives control and audio signals to and from the following control units:
- Amplifier for sound system (N40/3)
(with code (810) Sound system)
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3)
(with code (537) Digital radio)
- Media interface control unit (N125/1)
(with code (518) Media interface)

Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are processed in the radio and navigation unit.

Actuates output media
The following direct output signals are possible:
- Audio Out (speaker) (without code (810) Sound system)
- External fan (power supply, speed control and diagnosis)
- Power supply for FM/AM/RRCL [FZV] antenna and GPS antenna in the roof antenna module, Bluetooth antenna and FM rear window antenna amplifier

Design
The radio and navigation unit consists of the following components:
- Operating panels for controlling the audio, navigation and other telematics functions
- DVD drive
- Central computer
- Navigation processor
- Audio amplifier (without code (810) Sound system)

Function
The following function areas are included in the radio and navigation unit:
^ Control panels and central computer
^ DVD drive
^ Navigation and GPS control unit
^ Turn rate sensor

Control panels and central computer
The button actuations of the control panel on the radio and navigation unit are read in and made available for the central computer. Button actuations are further processed in the central computer and sent to additional system components as messages via the MOST or interior CAN.
Pressing the rotary switch on the radio and navigation unit switches on the radio and navigation unit. The volume for the respective set audio source is regulated by turning the rotary switch. The function keys switch over to the audio source desired by the user.

DVD drive
Data can be read from the navigation DVD or an audio CD and an MP3-CD/DVD can be played using the integrated DVD drive.

Navigation and GPS control unit
The navigation processor is integrated into the radio and navigation unit and calculates the location of the vehicle from the incoming GPS signals and the vehicle's route after the destination has been entered.

Turn rate sensor
The turn rate sensor determines the direction changes of the vehicle. It is installed into the navigation processor. A calibration is not required.
