Function requirements
^ Status "Circuit 30 ON"
^ COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) activated via "ON/OFF" button
^ Navigation (Navi) base function selected
^ No fault on global positioning system (GPS) antenna system
General
The navigation mode is an assistant function which supports the driver in reaching his/her destination without diverting his/her attention from traffic. This is done by:
- Route planning, route calculation and destination-oriented navigation
- Visual driving instructions in form of illustrations
- Intersection zoo
- Acoustic driving recommendations
- Display of navigation maps
The location of the vehicle and the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system.
The navigation system consists of a number of subfunctions which are described in separate documents:
^ Position finding and destination-oriented navigation
^ Route guidance through voice output
^ Display compass, with code (245) Electronic compass
Operating instructions
The navigation system can be operated using the following components:
- Control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
Function sequence
When entered using the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the control signals are processed within the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The voice input takes place via the hands-free system microphone group (A67b1). The words spoken are converted into an electrical signal by the hands-free system microphone group and routed to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via a direct line. The data entered for reaching the destination (destination-oriented navigation) is calculated by the navigation processor integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The route is then calculated taking the configured options into consideration. 5 routes are calculated and then displayed:
- Recommended route
- Route with widest possible roads
- Route without toll roads
- Shortest route
- Alternative route
The user can decide in favor of one of the routes and start the navigation. If the vehicle is no longer moving on the pre-calculated route, then the route is recalculated. If the recalculated values are plausible for the navigation system, then the modified route is displayed.
After calculation, the route appears on the map on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and by means of arrow pictograms on the display in the instrument cluster (A1). An acoustic information feature also announces "Route calculated". The signals for displaying the arrow pictograms on the display in the instrument cluster are forwarded by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.
