GF42.45-P-5118GM ESP control unit, component description

Component Identification:

Location
The ESP control unit is located in the left front of the engine compartment.

Component Identification:

Location
The ESP control unit is located in the left front of the engine compartment.

Task
The ESP control unit has the following tasks:
^ Control of functions
^ Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
^ Evaluating input factors
^ Actuation of components

Control of functions
The ESP control unit controls the following systems:

- Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
- Anti lock brake system (ABS)
- Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR)
- Electronic Traction System (ETS)
- Engine braking regulation (EBR)
- Electronic brake force distribution (EBV)
- Brake Assist (BAS)
- Trailer stabilization (Trailer Stability Assist (TSA)) (with code (550) Trailer hitch)
- Hill Start Assist
- Vehicle speed control for downhill driving (on model 164)
- Tire pressure loss warner (not with code (494) USA version)
- Cruise control
- Variable speed limiter (without code (494) USA version and without code (460) Canada version)
- Speed-sensitive power steering
- Distronic (with code (219) Distronic (DTR))

Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
The input factors are read in with the following connections:
^ Direct line
^ Vehicle dynamics CAN
^ Engine compartment CAN

Direct line
The following signals and components are read in via a direct line:

- Circuit 30
- Circuit 87
- Tml. 31
- BAS diaphragm travel sensor (A7/7b1)
- BAS release switch (A7/7s1)
- ESP pressure sensor (B34)
- Left front rpm sensor (/)L6/1
- Right front rpm sensor (/)L6/2
- Left rear rpm sensor (/)L6/3
- Right rear rpm sensor (/)L6/4

Vehicle dynamics CAN
The following components are read by the vehicle dynamics CAN:

- micro mechanical turn rate sensor AY pickup (B24/15)

Engine compartment CAN
The signals are read in by the ESP control unit via the engine compartment CAN.

The resultant functions are described in the respective function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).

Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the affected components are then actuated.

Actuation of components
Components are actuated with the following lines:
^ Direct line
^ Vehicle dynamics CAN
^ Engine compartment CAN

Direct line
The following components are actuated via a direct line:

- BAS solenoid valve A7/7y1
- SPS [PML] solenoid valve (Y10)

Vehicle dynamics CAN
The following components are actuated via the vehicle dynamics

CAN:
- Power supply of yaw rate, lateral and longitudinal acceleration sensor

Engine compartment CAN
The signals are transmitted by the ESP control unit via the engine compartment CAN.

The resultant functions are described in the respective function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
