B29/4 Left rear bumper intelligent radar sensor
B29/5 Right rear bumper intelligent radar sensor

Location
The radar sensors are mounted on the left and right on the inside of the rear bumper.

Task
The radar sensors detect vehicles in the blind spot via the integrated radar sensor system. The radar sensors are ultra wideband radar sensors with the following properties:
- Radar sensor detection range s = 0.5 to 3 m, at a resolution of s = 0.04 m
- Acquisition angle Angular = 80° with angle determination and Angular = 140° only detection (track)
- Radar sensor with f = 24.125 GHz carrier frequency
- Method of operation: Short pulse method with f = 5 GHz band width

The radar sensors work according to the Master/Slave principle.
The "Master function" and "Slave function" is defined via the plug coding. The "Master function" is determined for the right radar sensor.

This means that the left radar sensor transmits its information via the engine compartment-CAN (CAN-C) to the right radar sensor, which evaluates the respective information and passes on the corresponding requests or data via the engine compartment-CAN to the respective control units.

The radar sensor also have the following tasks:
- Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Output of signals

Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
The input factors are read in via the engine compartment CAN and contain the following information:
- Service brake, status
- Direction of movement of the vehicle
- Wheel speeds and wheel rotation direction
- Status information from the driver assist or driving safety system

The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).

Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are evaluated by the integrated microprocessors and the relevant components are then actuated.

Output of signals
Output of signal takes place via the engine compartment CAN.
The right radar sensor transmits the following signals via the front end CAN:
- 'Warning buzzer' request (A1h1)
- Request from multifunction display (A1p13)
- Request to the left Blind Spot Assist readiness and warning indicator (M21/1e2) and the right Blind Spot Assist readiness and warning indicator (M21/2e2)

The left radar sensor transmits detection data to the right radar sensor via the engine compartment CAN which uses it to generate the requests to emit a warning.
