General
The driver information system is operated using the:
- Control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]), with code (527) COMAND APS (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer

These operating instructions consist of the following subfunctions:
^ Base function, 6-disk DVD changer, with code (528) COMAND with DVD changer or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer
^ Base function, audio
^ Base function, TV, with code (863) Digital/analog TV tuner
^ Base function, video
^ Base function, navigation, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer
^ Basic telephony function
^ Actuation of audio signals (sound settings)
^ System settings

Base function, 6-disk DVD changer, with code (528) COMAND with DVD changer or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer
If the "CD/DVD eject and load button" is pressed, the default screen appears.
Control within the menu is possible either with the cross-shaped rocker button or with the number pad on the COMAND controller unit.

Selection possibilities in menu
- "Back"
- Previous menu is called up
- "Eject all"
- All inserted CDs or DVDs are automatically ejected one after the other
- "Fill empty locations"
- Magazine can be filled

CDs or DVDs which are ejected but not removed are automatically pulled back in after expiration of a certain time.

Base function, audio
If the audio base function is activated, the audio application last performed is started. If another audio application is to be started, then a change must be made in the menu bar and the Audio menu item selected. The following differences are present for the specific countries:
^ Audio base function, except code (494) USA version
^ Audio base function, with code (494) USA version

Audio base function, except code (494) USA version
The following audio sources can be selected in the menu item Audio:
^ Radio ((FM, AM (MW and, depending on country, LW or SW))
^ Digital Audio Broadcasting (digital radio) (DAB) operation, with code (537) Digital radio
^ Disk
^ Memory card
^ MUSIC REGISTER
^ Media interface, with code (518) Media interface
^ AUX

Media containing MP3 data can also be played (detected automatically).

Radio ((FM, AM (MW and, depending on country, LW or SW))
If the "Radio" menu item is activated, the default screen appears.

The following appears on the display:
- The current stations and the numbers of their memory locations ("station name" with radio data system (RDS))
- Cursor for selecting station

Selection or settings via function bar:
- "Radio"
- "Station list", "Frequency entry", "Fixed frequency", "Traffic Announcement (TA)"
- "Memory"
- List of stored stations, auto memory for automatic search and storage of 10 stations with best reception
- "FM"
- Frequency band selection (FM, MW and, depending on country LW or SW)
- "Sound"
- Configuration of audio output

The selections or settings are made using the control buttons of the COMAND controller unit or via the voice control of the VCS (with code (527) COMAND APS (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer).

DAB operation, with code (537) Digital radio
If the DAB radio menu item is activated, the default screen appears.
The following appears on the display:
- The ensemble (DAB package for a region)
- The current stations and the numbers of their memory locations
- Cursor for selecting station

Selection or settings via function bar:
- "DAB"
- "Subprograms","Station list","Station memory"
- "Memory"
- List of stored stations, auto memory for automatic search and storage of stations with best reception
- "Ensemble"
- Select ensembles (DAB package)
- "Sound"
- Configuration of audio output

The selections or settings are made using the control buttons of the COMAND controller unit or via the voice control of the VCS (with code (527) COMAND APS (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer).

Disk
If the "disk" menu item is activated, the default screen appears. The following appears on the display:
- Artist (if present on CD or DVD)
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Number of tracks on CD or DVD
- Medium (CD or DVD)

The following selections and settings are possible:
^ Selection and settings via function bar (CD audio)
^ Selection or settings with function bar (DVD audio)
^ Track selection using skip function
^ Fast Forward/Rewind

Selection or setting with function bar (CD audio)
- "CD"
- Playback mode ("Normal track sequence", "Track shuffle", "TA", "Read CD database")

Track selection with skip function
The previous track is played by pressing the "Select station via station search, rewind, select previous track" button. The next track is played by pressing the "Select station via station search, fast forward, select next track" button.

Fast Forward/Rewind
The playback location is moved to the right by pressing and holding down the "Select station via station search, rewind, select previous track" button on the COMAND controller unit. The playback location is moved to the left by pressing and holding down the "Select station via station search, fast forward, select next track" button on the COMAND controller unit.

Memory card
If the "Memory card" menu item is activated, the default screen appears. The following appears on the display:
- Number of tracks on the memory card
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Artist, track names or group, if stored

Selection or settings via function bar:
- "MP3"
- Playback mode ("Normal track sequence", "Folder shuffle", "Track shuffle", "TA")
- "Folder"
- Music folders on the data storage device
- "Changer"
- Select playback source (6-disk DVD changer (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer), memory card or Music Register)
- "Sound"
- Configuration of audio output

Music register
If the menu item "Music register" is activated, the default screen appears. The following appears on the display:
- Artist
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Number of tracks in directory of hard disk

- "Music Register"
- Playback mode ("Normal track sequence", "Folder shuffle", "Track shuffle", "Copy music files", "Erase all music files", "Memory info", "TA")
- "Folder"
- Music folders on hard disk
- "Changer"
- Select playback source (6-disk DVD changer (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer), memory card or Music Register)
- "Sound"
- Configuration of audio output

The selections or settings are made using the control buttons of the COMAND controller unit or via the voice control of the VCS (with code (527) COMAND APS (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer).

Media interface, with code (518) Media interface
Selection or connection options:
- iPods are connected to the iPod connector.
- USB devices are connected to the USB socket
- MTP devices are connected to the USB socket

Menu guidance and graphic display of the menu guidance is accomplished on the COMAND controller unit display and is dependent on the specific portable terminal connected.

If the "media interface" menu item is activated, the default screen appears.
The following appears on the display:
- Current track number
- Track name
- Graphical time and track display
- Name of current album
- Icon for medium that is connected (e.g. iPod)

Selection or settings via function bar:
- "Media Interface"
- Display metadata, active partition, playback mode ("Normal track sequence", "Track shuffle", "Category shuffle" or "Folder shuffle" (only with USB mass storage devices, if folder selected))
- "Music"
- Select a file, select a folder, select a category (current track list, alphabetical order, folder)
- "Changer"
- Select playback source (6-disk DVD changer (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer), memory card or Music Register)
- "Sound"
- Configuration of audio output

Selections or settings are made using the control buttons on the COMAND controller unit or the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group.

AUX
If the "AUX" menu item is activated, the default screen appears. Only two speaker symbols are shown on the display.
Selection or settings via function bar:
- "AUX" No further submenus (up to 30.6.09)
- "Volume" (as of 1.7.09)
- "Standard"
- "Boost"
- "Sound"
- Configuration of audio output

Selections or settings are made using the control buttons on the COMAND controller unit or the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group.

Audio base function, with code (494) USA version
The following audio sources can be selected from the menu item Audio:
- Radio (FM, AM, weatherband (WB))
- High definition (HD) mode, with code (517) HD radio
- Disk
- Memory Card
- Music register
- Media interface, with code (518) Media interface
- AUX

Radio (FM, AM (MW), WB)
If the menu item Radio is activated, the default screen appears. The following appears on the display:
- Current station and number of their memory locations (station name with Radio Data System (RDS))
- Cursor for selecting station
- Station name and frequency

Selection or settings via function bar:
- "Radio"
- Station list, frequency entry, station information
- "Presets"
- List of stored stations, auto memory for automatic search and storage of 10 stations with best reception
- "FM"
- Selection of frequency band (AM, FM, WB)
- "Sound"
- Configuration of audio output

Selections or settings can be made using the control buttons on the COMAND controller unit or the voice control of the VCS (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer).

HD mode, with code (517) HD radio
If the menu item HD radio is activated, the default screen appears. The following appears on the display:
- Category
- Current stations and number of their memory locations
- Cursor for selecting station

Selection or settings via function bar:
- "Sat Radio" menu
- List of stations, subprograms
- "Presets"
- Autosave, saved stations
- "Info"
- Information about current station
- "Cat."
- Search for category or cancel search
- "Sound"
- Configuration of audio output

Selections or settings are made using the control buttons of the COMAND controller unit or using the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group and using the voice control of the VCS (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer).

Disk
If the "disk" menu item is activated, the default screen appears. The following appears on the display:
- Artist (if present on CD or DVD)
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Number of tracks on CD or DVD
- Medium (CD or DVD)

Track selection using skip function
The previous track is played by pressing the "Select station via station search, rewind, select previous track" button. The next track is played by pressing the "Select station via station search, fast forward, select next track" button.

Fast Forward/Rewind
The playback location is moved to the right by pressing and holding down the "Select station via station search, rewind, select previous track" button on the COMAND controller unit. The playback location is moved to the left by pressing and holding down the "Select station via station search, fast forward, select next track" button on the COMAND controller unit.

Memory Card
If the memory card menu item is activated, the default screen appears. The following appears on the display:
- Number of tracks on memory card
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Artist, track names or group, if stored
