Function
The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) recognizes, when a new Short Message Service (SMS) message is received on each portable CTEL (A34/6) and then sends this to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) where it is then displayed.
In the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the received and transmitted SMS messages are sorted according to their status into the "read", "unread" and "sent" lists. The user also has the option at any time to delete SMS messages that are no longer required.
The user can also compile his/her own SMS messages and send them via the respective portable CTEL.

The parameters for sending an SMS message, such as service- provider no. or time stored, are provided here by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. If no parameters are stored, the parameters of the particular portable CTEL are used. If a fault occurs during an SMS action, e.g. cellular mobile telephone network not available or the respective portable CTEL is not plugged in, this is signaled to the user by the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) system with a corresponding error message.

In the national version, code 494 USA version, the user can only receive SMS's on the COMAND operating, display and control unit.
