Function requirement
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) is switched on, manually or automatically

General
The driver uses the "Display compass" function for orientation purposes, e.g. off-road. The driver is shown the following information on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
- Currently set steering angle (wheel position) of the front axle
- Current direction of travel shown on the compass with cardinal points on a rotating disk and a compass needle (the red tip of the compass needle always points north)
- Exact altitude (in meters) above average sea level
- Altitude (in meters) above average sea level in the form of a scale
- Current vehicle position in latitudinal coordinates
- Number of global positioning system (GPS) satellites currently received
- Current vehicle position in longitudinal coordinates
- Function bar with the option "Back", except code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer

The driver can also display the compass on the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster by selecting the menu item "Offroad display" on the instrument cluster (A1).

For the "Display compass" function, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit requires the following two signals:
- GPS signals from GPS antenna (A2/93a6)
- Steering angle signals from steering angle sensor (N49)

Display of the current direction of travel on the compass with cardinal points is also possible without GPS signals being received, since a gyro sensor which allows the cardinal compass points to be displayed without GPS reception is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

The "Display compass" function comprises the following subfunctions:
- Reception of GPS signals, function sequence
- Reception of steering angle signals, function sequence
- Display of compass, function sequence

Operating instruction
The "Display compass" function can only be selected by selecting the following menus in the specified sequence using the buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
- 1. Menu "Navigation"
- 2. Menu item "Position" in function bar
- 3. Sub-menu item "Compass"

On vehicles with code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer, the "Display compass" function is selected using the "Navigation" hardkey on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

The compass is displayed on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster by selecting the "Offroad display" menu via the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) or right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111).

Reception of GPS signals, function sequence
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit receives the GPS signals from the GPS satellites via the following path:
- GPS antenna
- Direct line
- GPS antenna splitter (A2/5), with code (359) TELE AID emergency call system and direct line

Using the received GPS signals and the signals received from the gyro sensor integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit generates the visual information to be shown on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.

Reception of steering angle signals, function sequence
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit receives the steering angle signals from the steering angle sensor via the following path:
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Engine compartment CAN
- Central gateway control unit (N93)
- Interior CAN

Using the received steering angle signals, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit generates the visual information shown on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller.

Display of compass, function sequence
The "Display compass" function can only be selected by selecting the following menus in the specified sequence using the buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
- 1. Menu "Navigation"
- 2. Menu item "Position" in function bar
- 3. Sub-menu item "Compass"

On vehicles with code (528) COMAND with DVD changer, the "Display compass" function is selected via the "Navigation" hardkey on the buttons of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

The control signals from the buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally. The visual information shown on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is also generated internally.
The compass is displayed on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster by selecting the "Offroad display" menu using the multifunction steering wheel button groups.
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the instrument cluster via the following path:
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module
- Engine compartment CAN

The visual information shown on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster is generated by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the interior CAN.
