Symbol and ambiance illumination in general
The symbol and ambiance illumination feature provides the brightness-adjustable illumination of all controls as well as the illumination of the vehicle interior.
The symbol and ambiance illumination feature consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence, search and symbol illumination
^ Ambiance illumination function sequence (model 164.8 as of 1.7.09 with code (877) Ambiance illumination)
Additional function requirements, search and symbol illumination
^ Standing lights ON, circuit 58
Function sequence, search and symbol illumination
The following information is read in and evaluated by the instrument cluster (A1) for controlling the search and symbol illumination:
- Status of standing lights actuation, provided by front SAM control unit (N10)
- Status of instrument and switch and controls illumination button, bright (A1s4)
- Status of instrument and switch and controls illumination button, dark (A1s5)
If the "ambient illumination" function has been activated via the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the vehicle is unlocked using the transmitter key (A8/1). This causes "Standing lights actuation active" status to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination.
If the driver door is then opened, the ambient illumination function goes off. "Standing lights actuation active" status is canceled, and the instrument cluster deactivates the search and symbol illumination. The controls in the vehicle are not illuminated again until the transmitter key in the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73) is moved to the radio position (circuit 15R On.
The instrument cluster uses the incoming data to generate the circuit 58d signal and transmits it via the interior CAN (CAN B) to the following control units:
- Radio (A2) (with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer or with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio)
- Radio and navigation unit (A2/56)
(with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer or code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio)
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3)
(with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)

- Left front door control unit (N69/1)
- Right front door control unit (N69/2)
- Overhead control panel control unit (N70)

The control units read in the circuit 58d signal and actuate the search and symbol illumination of the connected or integrated controls.
The instrument cluster also transmits the circuit 58d signal to the following control unit via the engine compartment CAN:
- Steering column tube module (N80)
The DVD player (with code (864) Rear entertainment system or code (866) Rear entertainment preinstallation and code (494) USA version) makes the circuit 58d signal available to the following components on the telematics CAN:
- Left rear display (A40/5)
- Right rear display (A40/6)
The overhead control panel control unit actuates the ambient lamp (A67e3) in the inside rearview mirror unit (A67) and transmits the request for switching on the footwell illumination via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.
The search and symbol illumination of the switches located on the overhead control panel control unit is switched on when a vehicle door is opened even without reception of a circuit 58d signal with a brightness value of 100 %.
If the status of the vehicle doors subsequently does not change, the search and symbol illumination is switched off after t = 30 s. The opening or closing of a vehicle door during the time interval triggers a restart.
The front SAM control unit actuates the following components:
- Cigar lighter with ashtray illumination, front (R3)
(with code (301) Ashtray package/smoker package)
- Left rear power window switch (S21/3)
(search and symbol illumination)

(search and symbol illumination)
- Footwell illumination:
- Right front footwell lamp (E17/15)
- Left front footwell lamp (E17/16)
- Right rear footwell lamp (E17/17)
(with code (876) Interior lights package)
- Left rear footwell lamp (E17/18)
(with code (876) Interior lights package)
The footwell lamps are actuated with a fixed brightness when the central locking (CL [ZV]) is unlocked and the status of circuit 15R is On.
This is defined via the software calibration number (SCN) coding.
When a vehicle door is opened or the interior lights switch, 1st seat row (N70s4) or the rear dome lamps switch (N70s2) is operated, the footwell lamps are actuated with a brightness value of 100 %. The status of circuit 15 and the status of the central locking system are transmitted by the EIS [EZS] control unit and the status of the vehicle doors is transmitted by the rear SAM control unit via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.
The front SAM control unit also actuates the following components in vehicles with code (876) Interior lights package:
- Left center air outlet illumination (E10/1)
- Left air outlet illumination (E10/2)
- Right air outlet illumination (E10/3)

The search and symbol illumination is switched off immediately when the vehicle is locked. Actuation of the search and symbol illumination of operating units in accordance with the status of the rain/light sensor (B38/2) only takes place with circuit 15R On. If circuit 15 is off, the search and symbol illumination is actuated in accordance with the daytime value. The rain/light sensor data is read in by the overhead control panel control unit and made available on the interior CAN.
