Function requirements for automatic interior lights control, general

Automatic interior lights control in general
The automatic interior lights control implements the actuation of all components of the interior illumination as well as the entrance and exit illumination.
The corresponding requests are generated automatically. The master control unit for the automatic interior lights control is the overhead control panel control unit (N70).

The automatic interior lights control feature consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Locator lighting function sequence
^ Function sequence for entrance and exit illumination
^ Function sequence for load compartment illumination
^ Function sequence for interior illumination with antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) alarm

Additional function requirements for locator lighting
^ Automatic interior lights switched on via door contact switch ON and OFF (N70s3)
^ Vehicle unlocking via the central locking system (CL [ZV]) or
^ Intentionally leaving the vehicle by removing the transmitter key (A8/1) from the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)

Locator lighting function sequence
To control the ambient illumination, the following information is read in and evaluated by the overhead control panel control unit:
- Door contact ON and OFF switch status
- Status of (CL [ZV]) and circuit 15 status made available on interior CAN by EIS [EZS] control unit

The overhead control panel control unit evaluates all incoming information and actuates the following interior illumination components:
- Left interior lamp, 1st seat row (N70e4)
- Right interior lamp, 1st seat row (N70e5)
- Left dome lamp, 2nd seat row (E15/12)
- Right dome lamp, 2nd seat row (E15/13)
- Load compartment center dome lamp (E15/4) (with model 164.1 or model 164.8 and 251.0/1 without code (876) Interior lights package)
- Additionally with model 164.8, 251.0/1 with code (847) 3rd seat row and code (876) Interior lights package
- 3rd seat row left reading lamp (E15/3e1)
- 3rd seat row right reading lamp (E15/3e2)
- 3rd seat row dome lamp (E15/3e3)

The overhead control panel control unit also transmits the request to switch on the footwell illumination to the front SAM control unit (N10) via the interior CAN.

The front SAM control unit then actuates the following footwell illumination components with the set brightness value for the symbol illumination:
- Right front footwell lamp (E17/15)
- Left front footwell lamp (E17/16)
- Additionally with code (876) Interior lights package
- Right rear footwell lamp (E17/17)
- Left rear footwell lamp (E17/18)

If the function is requested by unlocking the central locking, the locator lighting is switched off after t = 30 s or immediately, if the vehicle is locked again within t = 3 s of unlocking it. When the last vehicle door has been closed, the locator lighting is switched off after t = 8 s if circuit 15 is off, and immediately if circuit 15 is on. If the function is requested by intentionally leaving the vehicle, the locator lighting is switched off in accordance with the OFF delay time that has been activated via the instrument cluster (A1). The OFF delay time can be switched on and off. The OFF delay time is t = 10 s.

If the ambient illumination function has been activated via the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the vehicle is unlocked using the transmitter key.
This causes the "Standing lights actuation active" signal to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination. The search and symbol illumination function is described in a separate document.

Additional function requirements for entrance and exit illumination
^ Door contact ON and OFF switch in the automatic interior lights position
^ Open a vehicle door or the rear-end door

Function sequence for entrance and exit illumination
To control the entrance and exit illumination, the following information is read in and evaluated by the overhead control panel control unit:
- Door contact ON and OFF switch status
- Right front door rotary tumbler microswitch (M14/5s1) status
- Left front door rotary tumbler microswitch (M14/6s1) status
- Left rear door rotary tumbler microswitch (M14/8s1) status
- Right rear door rotary tumbler microswitch (M14/9s1) status
- Rear-end door locking unit (A72) status

The opening of a vehicle door is defined by the status of the door rotary tumbler microswitch. The status of the rear-end door is defined by the rear-end door locking unit.

The relevant status is read in by the rear SAM control unit (N10/8) and made available to the overhead control panel control unit on the interior CAN.

The overhead control panel control unit evaluates this and transmits the switch-on request for the entrance and exit illumination as well as the footwell illumination via the interior CAN to the following control units:
- Left front door control unit (N69/1)
- Right front door control unit (N69/2)
- Front SAM control unit
- Rear SAM control unit

The left front door control unit actuates the following entrance and exit illumination components:
- left front door entrance and exit lamp (E17/3)
- Left front door inside handle illumination (E17/11)

The right front door control unit actuates the following entrance and exit illumination components:
- Right front door entrance and exit lamp (E17/4)
- Right front door inside handle illumination (E17/12)

The rear SAM control unit actuates the following entrance and exit illumination components:
- Left rear door entrance and exit lamp (E17/5)
- Right rear door entrance and exit lamp (E17/6)
- Rear-end door warning lamp (E17/27)

- Left rear door inside handle illumination (E17/13)
- Right rear door inside handle illumination (E17/14)

as soon as the rain/light sensor (B38/2) registers "Darkness"

The overhead control panel control unit actuates the following interior illumination components:
- Interior lights, 1st seat row
- Dome lamps, 2nd seat row
- Dome lamp, load compartment

- Dome lamp, 3rd seat row and reading lamps, 3rd seat row

The front SAM control unit actuates the footwell lamps at a brightness value of 100 %.
If all vehicle doors are closed again and if the EIS [EZS] control unit supplies the circuit 15 ON terminal status to the interior CAN, the interior illumination is then switched off. The footwell lamps are then actuated again at the set brightness value for the symbol illumination.

To preserve the battery (G1), with a circuit status of circuit 15 Off, all activated lights are switched off after t = 5 min. with a vehicle door open, or t = 8 s after the closing of the last vehicle door.
If the rear-end door remains open, the warning lamp and the rear-end door ambient lamp are automatically switched off after t = 10 min. If the function is requested by intentionally leaving the vehicle, the warning lamp and the rear-end door ambient lamp are switched off in accordance with the OFF delay time that has been activated via the instrument cluster.

Additional load compartment illumination function requirements

Function sequence for load compartment illumination
In order to control the load compartment illumination, the status of the rear-end door is read in by the rear SAM control unit and made available on the interior CAN.

In accordance with this status, the rear SAM control unit actuates the following components:
- Left trunk lamp (E18/5) (with model 164.8)
- Right trunk lamp (E18/4) (with model 251.0/1)

The overhead control panel control unit receives the status of the rear-end door and also actuates the following components:
- Interior lights, 1st seat row
- Dome lamp, load compartment

- Dome lamp, 3rd seat row and reading lamps, 3rd seat row

The rear-end door warning lamp and the rear-end door ambient lamp are also actuated according to the data from the rain/light sensor, which are made available on the interior CAN by the overhead control panel control unit.

If the rear-end door is opened, the trunk lamp is automatically switched off after t = 10 min.

Additional function requirements for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm (with code (551) Antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))

The rear SAM control unit transmits the "ATA alarm activated" signal to the overhead control panel control unit and the front SAM control unit via the interior CAN.

The overhead control panel control unit then actuates the following interior illumination components:
- Interior lights, 1st seat row
- Dome lamp, load compartment

The rear SAM control unit actuates the following components:
- Rear-end door warning lamp
- Rear-end door ambient lamp
- Trunk lamp

The front SAM control unit actuates the footwell lamps.

Function sequence for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment
The interior illumination is actuated in order to provide better orientation for the occupants and the first air personnel following an accident.
The restraint system control unit (N2/7) sends the "Crash event" information over the engine compartment-CAN (CAN C). The central gateway control unit (N93) receives the information and makes it available to the overhead control panel control unit on the interior CAN.
The overhead control panel control unit then transmits the request to switch on the footwell illumination, and actuates the following components:
- Interior lights, 1st seat row
- Load compartment dome lamp or 3rd seat row dome lamp
- Reading lamp, 3rd seat row

The front SAM control unit receives the request from the overhead control panel control unit and actuates the footwell lamps with a brightness value that corresponds to 100 %. The interior illumination function following an accident with airbag deployment is deactivated under the following conditions:
- Hazard warning system switch (N72/1s5) actuated
- Unlocking the CL [ZV]
- Change in circuit status from circuit 15R to circuit 15 On
- Opening a vehicle door
