Function requirements
- Status "circuit 30 ON"
- One mobile phone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
- Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone in vehicle and authorized at the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3)

In order to be able to operate a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone authorized at the COMAND operating, display and controller unit in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support the handsfree profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. More information can be found at: http://www.mercedes-benz.com/connect

General
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit supports the standard Bluetooth network technology for easy and rapid integration of mobile phones in the vehicle. Bluetooth is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth devices (e.g. mobile phones) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth, next to the wide availability of Bluetooth devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth devices to a Bluetooth network (ad-hoc network). The extremely high data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of such a Bluetooth network is what makes the use of Bluetooth in the vehicle interesting.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit can integrate mobile phones of the newest generation into the vehicle hierarchy using the Bluetooth interface mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna (A2/91).

If no mobile phone is authorized yet at the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via Bluetooth, a search for Bluetooth compatible devices can be performed using the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. If Bluetooth devices were found, the user is notified of all the Bluetooth devices listed in terms of trustworthiness ("trust" or "untrust"). The user can then authorize available Bluetooth devices (log on), interrupt connections to trustworthy Bluetooth devices or deauthorize Bluetooth devices. The mobile phone system includes the following processes:
- Switching on and off characteristics
- Establishing call and terminating call
- Accepting calls, rejecting calls and toggling
- Address book
- "Private Mode
- "Seamless Switch"

Switching on and off characteristics
A mobile phone operated with Bluetooth can be switched on and off only with the buttons on the mobile phone itself. The switch-on signal is processed internally in the mobile phone. The lock code inquiry is only shown on the display of the mobile phone, if configured on the mobile phone and if the mobile phone transmits this status. The lock code can only be entered using the buttons on the mobile phone. The reception status is received by the mobile phone's antenna.

The display of the lock-code and the reception status as well as the signals of the mobile phone buttons are processed internally in the mobile phone.

The switch-off signal via the mobile phone button is processed internally in the mobile phone. If the rechargeable battery of the mobile phone is empty, the mobile phone is also switched off. This process also runs internally in the mobile phone.

Function requirements for establishing and terminating a call
- Mobile phone and COMAND operating, display and controller unit are switched on

With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, read access to the telephone book in the mobile phone is possible when the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Profile Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).

Establishing call and terminating call
The mobile phone can be used by the user to initiate or terminate a telephone call to another person in the mobile phone system network or the fixed-line network.

A telephone call can be established or terminated using the:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Telephone buttons or keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (establish telephone call only)

Establishing and terminating a telephone call involve the following processes:
- Establish and terminate telephone call via the buttons on the mobile phone
- Establish and terminate telephone call using the telephone buttons or the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Establish and terminate telephone call using left and right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Establish telephone call using VCS Establish telephone call via navigation mode

Establish and terminate telephone call via the buttons on the mobile phone
With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the control signals from the mobile phone buttons are processed internally and are not forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:

The telephone call is completed in "Private mode" when the mobile phone supports "Private mode" "Private mode" is activated.

In "Private Mode" the user makes a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to take part in the conversation, i.e. voice input takes place via the microphone integrated in the mobile phone, and voice output takes place via the speaker integrated in the mobile phone.

Pressing the "END" button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call (also in handsfree mode). When a telephone call is terminated using the mobile phone buttons, the mobile phone interrupts the transmission or reception of mobile phone signals or data. This process runs internally in the mobile phone.

Establish and terminate telephone call using the buttons on the mobile phone or the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
The base function "Telephone (TEL)" is called up using the "Tel" hard key on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or the keypad via the "Tel" menu item in the application bar. The base function "Telephone (TEL)" is shown on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The following ways of dialing a telephone number are now available to the user:
- Enter telephone number with keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit directly or with the speller offered
- Search for the telephone number using the "Address book" menu entry in the address book
- Search for the telephone number using the "Call lists" menu entry in the call lists (accepted, dialed)

The name of the person who you wish to call can be selected in the address book and the call lists by scrolling up and down.

The control signals from the telephone buttons or the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally. The menu item is also indicated internally on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. After dialing the telephone number via the telephone buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and pressing the "Accept phone call" button or by selecting the telephone function via the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and then activating the "TRANSMIT" function, the telephone call is completed in handsfree mode (see function sequence "Establish telephone call in handsfree mode").

The telephone call is terminated by pressing the "END" button on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or by activating the "END" function in the "Telephone (Tel)" base function. The control signals from the telephone buttons or the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally.

Establish and terminate telephone call using left and right multifunction steering wheel button group
The address book of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is selected by pressing the system selection (S110s3) button via the selection menu in the instrument cluster (A1).

The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling up and down in the address book of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit using the scroll up and down button (S110s1). The telephone call is established in handsfree mode with the accept and terminate phone call button (S111s3) (see function sequence "Establish telephone call in handsfree mode").

The telephone call can then be terminated again using the accept and terminate phone call button.

The control signals from the left and right multifunction steering wheel button group are forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit over the following components:
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Engine compartment CAN (CAN C)

- Interior CAN (CAN B)

Display in the instrument cluster is accomplished by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the interior CAN.

Establishing telephone call via VCS
The voice control of the VCS [SBS] is activated by pressing the VCS On button (S111s4) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group.

The control signal from the VCS [SBS] button is forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit over the following components:
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module
- Engine compartment CAN
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN

A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.

The signal for the signal tone is transmitted by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit for vehicles with code (810) Sound system via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier (N40/3).

From there, the signal is transmitted over direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker (H4/5)
- Right front door speaker (H4/6)

On vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the signal tone is transmitted from the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the following speakers via direct lines:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker

Once the VCS has been activated, a telephone number can be searched for and dialed using different voice commands. The voice commands are received by the handsfree system microphone group (A67b1) and transferred to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit over a direct line.

The telephone call is established in handsfree mode using the voice control of the VCS [SBS] (see function sequence "Establishing a telephone call in handsfree mode").

The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".

Establishing a telephone call via navigation mode
If a telephone number is stored for a point of interest (POI), the user can select it using the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or via the voice control of the VCS [SBS]. The telephone call is established in handsfree mode (see function sequence "Establishing a telephone call in handsfree mode"). The control signals from the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally.

The VCS [SBS] signals are forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the same route as for the "Establish telephone call via VCS [SBS]" function sequence.

Establish telephone call in handsfree mode
After the telephone call has been established, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit transmits the mobile phone signals and data to the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna

The mobile phone signals and data are received by the mobile phone via the reverse route.

The voice input in the handsfree mode is received by the handsfree system microphone group and transferred to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit over a direct line.

On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, voice output is performed by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the amplifier for sound system and from there, via direct lines, to the following speakers:
- Left rear door speaker (H4/3)

Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book.

Data can also be transferred from other external devices (e.g. personal digital assistant (PDA), laptop, etc.) into the address book via the Bluetooth interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna. vCards can also be transferred into the address book from an SD card via the Secure Digital (SD) card slot at the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. These data are then permanently available as address entries.

Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries.

Address entries can contain the following:
- Names (surname and first name)
- "Yomigana field" (for phonetic entry of the name in "Katakana" syllabary)
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (private, business, fixed line network, mobile or car)
- Company name
- Geo position (private or business)
- Notes

A total of 150 entries with voice commands (voice tags) is available for the voice control system. The call can be established via the VCS [SBS] for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field". The address entries stored in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are displayed in the address book.

Read access to the phone book of the mobile phone is provided if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).

"Private Mode"
When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation.
