Permanent Speed Limiter, general
The Permanent Speed Limiter (also known as SPEEDTRONIC) is an additional cruise control function that is integrated into the ESP control unit (N47-5) or the recuperative braking system control unit (N30/6) (with hybrid).

The Permanent Speed Limiter allows the driver to limit the maximum speed of the vehicle (e.g. for winter tires with a lower permissible maximum speed).

The set maximum speed is sent by the instrument cluster (A1) over the engine compartment CAN (CAN C) to the ESP control unit or to the recuperative braking system control unit (with hybrid).

The request to decelerate the vehicle is sent by the ESP control unit or the recuperative braking system control unit (with hybrid) over the engine compartment CAN to the CDI control unit (N3/9) (with diesel engine) or to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (with gasoline engine).

Shift requests to the automatic transmission (except hybrid) are transmitted by the ESP control unit over the engine compartment CAN to the electric controller unit (VGS) (Y3/8).
A shift request to the automatic transmission is sent by the hybrid from the recuperative brake system control unit over the hybrid CAN (CAN L) to the hybrid fully integrated transmission controller unit.

Permanent Speed Limiter function sequence
Engine power is reduced as the vehicle approaches the set maximum speed.
If this is inadequate, the service brake is actuated proportionately and if necessary, the automatic transmission shifts to a lower gear so that the set maximum speed is not exceeded (e.g. in case of steep declivity).

The Permanent Speed Limiter is switched on/off using the LH or RH multifunction steering wheel button group (S110, S111) with the "Settings" menu, sub-menu "Vehicle",menu item "Speed limiting (winter tires)" on the instrument cluster.

The maximum speed can be set in 10 km/h increments from 160 to 240 km/h.

If the Permanent Speed Limiter is switched on, it is activated at the same time and can be switched off or deactivated again only through the menu in the instrument cluster.

A warning message is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) by the instrument cluster at roughly 10 km/h below the set maximum speed.

While the Permanent Speed Limiter is active, the cruise control or Variable Speed Limiter (except code (494) USA version) can be use independently of the set maximum speed, up to a maximum of 200 km/h.
