N72/1 OBF control unit
Location
The OBF control unit is located in the center of the instrument panel above the gearshift lever (with transmission 711.6) or the ESM [EWM] control unit (N15/5) (with transmission 722.6).
Task
The OBF control unit reads in the integrated switches and buttons, controls the light emitting diodes (LED) of the integrated switches and buttons, is the master control unit for the heated seats (SIH) (with code (H16) Heater for driver seat or with code (H15) Heater for front passenger seat) and is connected to the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B).
Generally the OBF control unit controls the following systems with the attendant functions or supports the master control units:
- Electrical load compartment sliding door (E-LST), with code (T55) Electrical actuation for right sliding door or with code (T56) Electrical actuation for left sliding door
- Switch request E-LST "OPEN" or "CLOSE" for left or right sliding door
- SIH, with code (H16) Heater for driver seat
- Actuation of driver seat heated cushion (R13/1) and driver seat backrest heated cushion (R13/2)
- SIH, with code (H15) Heater for front passenger seat
- Actuation of front passenger seat heated cushion (R13/3) and front passenger seat backrest heated cushion (R13/4)
- Heated rear window (HHS), with code (H22) Heated rear window or with code (W78) Window in tailgate or hinged rear door with wipe/wash system
- HHS switch request "ON" or "OFF"
- Heated windshield (HFS), with code (F49) Heated windshield
- HFS switch request "ON" or "OFF"
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
- Switch request for acceleration slip regulation (ASR) "ON" or "OFF"
- Central locking (CL [ZV])

The OBF control unit reads in the following integrated switches:
- Left sliding door button (N72/1s1), with code (T56) Electrical actuation for left sliding door
- Left heated seat button (N72/1s2), with code (H16) Heater for driver seat
- Rear window heater button (N72/1s3), with code (H22) Heated rear window or with code (W78) Window in tailgate or hinged rear door with wipe/wash system
- Windshield heater button (N72/1s4), with code (F49) Heated windshield
- ASR OFF button (N72/1s5)
- Hazard warning system switch (N72/1s6)
- Inside central locking button
- PTS OFF button (N72/1s9), with code (EZ8) Parktronic system (PTS)
- Right heated seat button (N72/1s10), with code (H15) Heater for front passenger seat
- Right sliding door button (N72/1s11), with code (T55) Electrical actuation for right sliding door
The OBF control unit also communicates with the following control units over CAN-B:
- With the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)
- The OBF control unit sends, e.g. "CL_IT (Inside central locking button actuated)"
- The OBF control unit receives, e.g. "CL_ST (CL status)"
- With the instrument cluster (A1)
- The OBF control unit receives, e.g. "IC_58D_B (Instrument illumination brightness)"
- With the SAM control unit (N10)
- The OBF control unit transmits, e.g. "HHS_SWON (Switch on HHS)"
- The OBF control unit receives, e.g. "HHS_ON (HHS switched on)"

The OBF control unit evaluates the switching states, messages and feedback from the individual systems and then controls the following switch LEDs in the appropriate manner:
- The LED of the left sliding door button, with code (T56) Electrical actuation for left sliding door,is permanently actuated or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of the left heated seat button, with code (H16) Heater for driver seat, is actuated permanently or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of the rear window heater button, with code (H22) Heated rear window or with code (W78) Window in tailgate or hinged rear door with wipe/wash system, is actuated permanently or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of the windshield heater button, with code (F49) Heated windshield is actuated permanently or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of the hazard warning system switch is actuated to flash on and off.
- The LED of the inside central locking button is actuated permanently or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of the PTS OFF button, with code (EZ8) Parktronic system (PTS), is actuated permanently or it flashes on or off.
- The LED of the right heated seat button, with code (H15) Heater for front passenger seat, is actuated permanently or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of the right sliding door button, with code (T55) Electrical actuation for right sliding door, is permanently actuated or it flashes on and off.
The respective switches and buttons of the OBF control unit are designed as rocker switches. If the OBF control unit recognizes actuation of the respective switch or button for t ≥ 25 s, then the signal is ignored and a fault is saved. An actuation signal is not sent to the CAN-B.
When the respective switch or button is actuated again the OBF control unit must detect beforehand the park position of the respective switch or button for t > 1 second.
