For the test drive select a mixed route with express and country roads of min. 100 km.
Prior to the test drive examine the engine for external oil loss. To prevent faulty measurements, check engine oil for fuel dilution and change, if required.
1. Park vehicle on an even place. Mark this place.
2. On engine 617, Install check valve between air oil cooler and hose (on top of oil cooler). The arrow stamped in the check valve must point towards the oil filter.
CAUTION! On engines 615.940/941 and 616.912 with air conditioner and small air oil cooler the check valve need not be mounted.
3. In idle, bleed oil cooler and hose at both bleeding screws of the check valve. An oil temperature must be reached which ensures that oil flows through oil cooler.
4. Top up oil to the maximum marking or draw off.
CAUTION! On engines 617.950/951/952 fill to approximately 5 mm above maximum mark (20 to 25 mm on dipstick with millimeter graduation).
5. Take engine oil temperature to 80 °C. Measure the oil temperature with tele-thermometer 116 589 27 21 00. Insert temperature sensor of tele-thermometer into oil dipstick guide tube only until it contacts the oil pan floor.
6. Measure oil level exactly 5 minutes after shutting off the engine using oil dipstick 115 589 15 21 00 with millimeter graduation. The millimeter graduation must face the engine. Do not keep the oil dipstick more than 3 seconds in the oil pan. Corresponding to the all level read off in mm, determine oil quantity In cubic cm with the aid of the diagram and enter it on the measuring sheet.
7. Carry out oil test drive and park vehicle again on the marked place.
8. Repeat steps 3, 5 and 6.
NOTE: If the engine is to be shut off for a while for cooling the oil down to 80 °C, it must be operated for approx. 10 seconds under jerky acceleration prior to the measuring procedure.
9. Determine how much oil has been consumed and establish the consumption for 1,000 km.
