3. Miscellaneous Cold Weather Recommendations
3.1 Tires and Tire ChainsWe recommend the use of M + S radial snow tires on all four wheels for the winter season. Observe permissible maximum speed for M + S radial tires.
Tire chains can only be used on the driving wheels. Use only chains tested and recommended by us. Retighten newly mounted tire chains after a few miles of driving. Do not exceed the permissible maximum speed of 50 km/h (30 mph). On clear roads, remove the chains as soon as possible.
3.2 Door Locks
To avoid freezing of door locks, or to free-up frozen locks, lock de-icing spray (Part Number 000 989 07 25) is recommended. The use of other de-icers may dissolve the factory lock lubricant and lead to future problems.
3.3 Windshield Washer System
To prevent freezing of the washer system (which leads to container and pump damage) the system should only be filled with windshield washer so]vent.
3.4 Vehicle Care
Salt and gravel used to clear snowy and icy roads are extremely corrosive to the vehicle's outside surface and underbody. Therefore, more frequent washings are necessary during the winter than during the summer season to deal with these unfavorable conditions. Particular attention should be paid to washing out "caked-on" dirt from underbody crevices, bumpers, etc. since these hold salty moisture for long periods of time and accelerate the corrosive process.
Following the washing, an occasional inspection of the vehicle's paintwork and underbody for physical damage should be made. Any damaged areas should be repaired as appropriate. It is especially important to restore damage to the undercoating before the winter season starts.
