Programmed Repairs (Symptom Based Repairs)

NOTE: At operating temperature the oil pressure at idle may drop to 0.3 bar gage pressure. Upon acceleration, the oil pressure should rise again immediately and should attain at least 3 bar gage pressure at 3000/min.

Complaint:
Oil pressure at idle below 0.5 bar gage pressure.

Cause/Remedy:
1. Check engine oil level and correct, if required.
2. Check previous readout by connecting another oil pressure gage instead of vehicle instrument.
3. Check oil filter for abrasion of bearings.
4. Replace oil filter element.
5. As an experiment, replace oil pressure relief valve in oil pump.
6. As an experiment, replace oil pump.
7. Measure main bearings and connecting rod bearings.

Complaint:
Oil pressure is good in lower speed range and will drop with increasing speed.

Cause/Remedy:
1. Check engine oil level (oil level should be not below lower and not above upper mark on oil dipstick).

Note: The oil level is measured with engine at operating temperature approx. 2 - 3 minutes after stopping engine.

2. Check oil pan lower half for damage, replace dented oil pan.
3. Check rubber adapter on strainer of oil pump for distortion or damage.
