General

As of model year 1984, double roller timing chains have been installed in all 116 engines. Older engines with a single roller timing chain (simplex chain) should be converted to a double roller chain (duplex chain) set-up.

The conversion should be done when the timing chain needs to be replaced or an engine is overhauled.

The procedure for replacing the single roller chain with a double roller chain and sprockets as well as setting the valve timing, without engine removal, is described in the Removal and Installation procedure.
