Checking Start of Delivery W/ Engine Running - RIV Method

Engines OM 601 and OM 617.95 (as of January 1983 production)

Using the RIV (Dynamic) method, start of delivery and maximum injection advance can be checked with the engine running. It is not necessary to remove injection lines for this procedure.. Refer to service microfiche no. 2014 03 or 2023 01, job no. 07.1-112.

Figure 1 - Arrangement for Checking Procedure:

Start of delivery and injection advance are checked with the reference impulse (RI) adapter (010) and an approved engine analyzer (001) (i.e., Sun Electric models MAG-M, Master 3 or MCM 2110). See Figure 1.

Start of delivery is checked at engine idle speed. The RI adapter (tool no. 617 589 09 21 00) then modifies the reference (governor) impulse from the injection pump so that the trigger pliers (011) of the engine analyzer can pick up the signal. In addition, a TDC impulse transmitter (021) (part of tool no. 601 589 04 21 00) is required to pick up the TDC impulse from the crankshaft. Engine 617.95 has a built-in TDC impulse transmitter.

Test values at idle:

Idle speed 750 +/- 50 rpm
RI test value 15~ +/- 1~ after TDC
RI adjusting value 15~ after TDC

Maximum injection advance is checked at maximum governed engine speed.

Test values at maximum governed speed:

Advance Angle
Engine Maximum Governed Speed Governor (~ Crankshaft)

OM 617.95 5100 +/- 100 617 070 05 45 13~ - 17~
617 070 08 45
OM 601 5000 +/- 100 601 070 05 45 17~ - 21~

Example 1 (OM 617.95):

If the RI value is 14~ after TDC at idle and 1~ before TDC at maximum engine speed, the advance angle is 14~ + 1~ = 15~, or within tolerance of 13~ - 17~.

Example 2:

At idle, RI value = 14~ after TDC; at maximum engine speed, RI = 1~ after TDC advance angle = 14~ - 1~ = 13~; value is within tolerance of 13~ - 17~.

NOTE: The reference impulse (RI) transmitter (017) (tool no. 617 589 10 21 00) must be connected for the test.

Engine Analyzers

The measuring range of the engine analyzer is limited. The analyzers indicate the start of delivery correctly only up to -20~ after TDC. A start of delivery of -23~ after TDC would be an indication of an unrealistic value, the Sun analyzers for example, will show erratic values or continuously indicate 00.0~ or -20~.
