A. Chassis and Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) All Models, as of August 1,1983
As of August 1, 1983, a letter is used as the 11th digit of the chassis and U.S. vehicle identification number (VIN) respectively, to identify the manufacturing plant (see example).
The letters A through E apply to the Sindelfingen plant, letters F through H to the Bremen plant.
Example: Chassis identification number
NOTE: The VIN no longer indicates if a vehicle is equipped with a manual or automatic transmission. This identification is still possible using the eighth digit of the engine number (0 = manual, 2 = automatic).
In addition, there is now only one series of chassis end numbers (the last 6 digits - sequential serial number) applicable for every model (for example, 123.133/153/193) within a particular body style (Wl23). It is also possible to have vehicles of the same model with identical chassis end numbers, differentiated only by the manufacturing plant letter.
