Noise In Airbag Unit

Airbag Unit Rattles on Steering Wheel:

Cause/Remedy:

Axial play in contact bridge (57), fastening screws (75) or radial play in three-spoke springs.

Move airbag unit (padded panel) on steering wheel diagonally to and fro to locate axial play.

Unscrew and remove airbag from steering wheel, taking care to observe safety precautions and disarming SRS system.

Steering Wheel, Type 1

1. If axial play is for example at top left of airbag unit, carefully squeeze left lower contact bridge (arrowed) slightly together in the area of the contact faces. If play is at top right, carry out same procedure on right lower contact bridge (arrowed).

NOTE: If the axial play cannot be rectified in this way, the contact bridges must be replaced.

2. Check three-spoke springs. If radial play is found in one spring (installed), the springs must be removed and the support for the mesh-type impact boss bent (arrowed) appropriately.

Steering Wheel, Type 2

3. Install steering wheel for airbag unit (series production since 06/82).
On type 2 steering wheels, a capstan wheel is fitted to the right-side contact bridge to rectify axial play.

Example: If play is below left or top right, turn capstan (80) to the left with a suitable tool until play is eliminated.

NOTE: The airbag unit must NOT be removed for this operation. A channel is incorporated in the foam padding around the steering wheel to guide the adjusting tool (arrowed).

Steering Wheel, Type 3 (In production since 12/85)

Loosen socket head screws and adjust airbag unit on steering wheel so that it is uniformly seated. Tighten both socket head screws one full turn. Now tighten left-side socket head screw to specified torque. Raise right side of airbag slightly from steering wheel, and tighten right-side socket head screw to specified torque.
