Engine Lubrication: Testing and Inspection

Measuring Oil Consumption:

NOTE: The oil consumption is determined with the oil dipstick with millimeter graduation and the appropriate test sheet. It should not exceed 1.51/1000km.

The procedure for the oil consumption measurement is described on the front page of the test sheet.

The oil consumption indicated on the dipstick in mm can be read off in cubic cm by means of the diagram at the back of the test sheet.

In order to avoid wrong measurements, the engine oil must be checked for fuel dilution before conducting the consumption measurement.

On engines with a thermostat in the oil filter it is necessary during venting that the flow passes to the air oil cooler, i.e. the thermostat must be opened. For this purpose, run engine with increased idle speed until the thermostat opens (clear rise of the temperature on the air oil cooler can be felt).

Test Sheet for Oil Consumption Test

M9:

Test oil consumption with new engine oil. Prior to the test, check engine for exterior oil leaks.
1. Park vehicle on level area and mark vehicle position.
2. Drain or extract used engine oil and top up with new engine oil to approx.5 mm below the maximum marking of the engine oil dipstick.
3. On vehicles equipped with air/oil cooler (not air/oil coolers below RH wheel house), install check valve 110 589 00 91 00 between oil cooler and hose (on top of oil cooler). The arrow stamped in the check valve must point towards the oil filter.
4. With the engine idling and oil flowing through the cooler (oil cooler must be warm), bleed oil cooler and hose at the two bleeder screws of the check valve. Shut off engine.
5. Check engine oil level. If necessary, top up or extract to 5 mm below the maximum marking of the engine oil dipstick
6. Raise engine oil temperature to 80 °C. Measure oil temperature with telethermometer 124 589 07 21 00.
7. Shut off engine. Wait exactly 5 minutes, then measure oil level with dipstick 115 589 15 21 00. The millimeter graduation of the oil dipstick must point towards the engine. Withdraw oil dipstick after 3 seconds and read off Oil level In mm. Read off the oil quantity (mm) corresponding to the oil level (mm) from the diagram on the oil consumption test sheet and enter on the test sheet.

CAUTION: During the 5 minutes waiting period. unscrew the central bolt of the upright oil filter (model 126) and lift for approx 1 minute in order that the oil should drain from the oil filter housing. Tighten central bolt to 25-30 Nm.

8. Make an oil consumption road test over a distance of at least 100 km on expressways or trunk roads. As far as possible, choose operating conditions similar to those at the customer's.
9. Park vehicle on marked area and repeat jobs listed under stps 4, 6 and 7.

CAUTION: Switch off engine and allow engine oil to cool down to 80° C. Before the measuring process (item 4). Run engine for approx. 10 seconds, pumping the accelerator.

10. Calculate oil consumption in liters/1000 km on the basis of the consumed oil quantity (ccm) and test distance (oil consumption road test in km).
