REPLACING THE RUBBER FRICTION BEARINGS ON THE
STEERING IDLER ARM MOUNT
Figure 1:
The rubber friction bearings (5, Figure 1) of the steering idler arm mount are often replaced unnecessarily.
The rubber frictions bearings should only be replaced under the following conditions:
^ Noisy steering idler arm mount (rubber friction bearings)
^ Bearing play > 0.5 mm
To determine the bearing play, proceed as follows:
1. Attach a dial gauge with magnetic holder to the frame floor so that the dial gauge and the steering idler arm form a right angle.
2. Place the measurement rod of the dial gauge between the steering linkage supports. Set dial gauge indicator to "0".
Figure 2:
3. Determine the play in the steering idler arm mount by pushing up or pulling down steering idler arm or drag link (arrows, Figure 2). Read play on dial gauge (nominal value of bearing play should be less than 0.5 mm).
Note:
Use only moderate force when pushing up or pulling down on the steering idler arm.
