The low-pressure side of a fuel injection system includes the fuel tank, supply pump, fuel filter, suction gallery of the injection pump, overflow valve, and fuel lines. The supply pump mounted on the injection pump draws the fuel from the fuel tank and delivers it to the suction gallery of the injection pump. The fuel flows through filters which protect the precision manufactured injection pump from the impurities contained in the fuel.
The fuel pressure required for injection is generated on the high-pressure side of the injection pump. The fuel is pumped via the delivery valve, fuel-injection tubing and nozzle holder to the injection nozzle. As a result of the pressure of the fuel, the nozzle needle opens and the diesel fuel enters the combustion chamber in finely atomized form. By means of an adjusting device the fuel delivery is controlled by the governor as a function of engine speed and load. The adjusting device is integrated in the injection pump and the governor is usually mounted on the injection pump.
