SUBJECT: FUEL PUMP RELAY FAILS FOR NO APPARENT REASON MODELS 126 WITH GASOLINE ENGINES STARTING MODEL YEAR 1986
In cases of fuel pump relay failure in vehicles built prior to 10/87, modify the footrest by cutting a chamfer on the support rib. In addition, carefully inspect the wiring harness in the footwell area leading to the two connectors located below the ATA control unit. Feel for uneven wire insulation inside the harness tubing and check for damage to the tubing itself. Reroute the harness to prevent later damage, or replace it if it is damaged. A wire damaged by the mounting screw can shorten to ground, thereby damaging the fuel pump relay.

As of October 1987 production, the footrest in the front passenger footwell area has been modified. A chamfer has been formed on the support rib so that it does not press the wiring harness against the mounting screw.
