Positive Crankcase Ventilation: Description and Operation

The purpose of the positive crankcase ventilation system is to prevent crankcase vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. Hoses link the valve cover to a calibrated orifice in the intake system and the air cleaner. The crankcase is subjected to constant vacuum, allowing blow-by gases to be drawn into the engine and burned. Baffles in the valve cover prevent lubricating oil from being drawn into the system.
