Remove/Install Instrument Cluster

Preceding work:
- Engine compartment panel removed and noise encapsulation removed.
- Airbag Disarmed, See Air Bags and Seatbelts.

Removal and Installation:




- Disconnect, ground cable at battery.
- Detach speedometer shaft at transmission (except models 124.034/036).

CAUTION: This must be done without fail before removing the instrument cluster. Also, even if instrument cluster is only withdrawn halfway, e. g. for replacing bulb.
The speedometer shaft must not be kinked or tensioned.

- Unclip speedometer shaft (1) at front cover over pedals from retaining clip (1), clip into place (except models 124.034/036).

CAUTION: Protect steering column trim from damage, e. g. by using a cloth.

- Pull instrument cluster (A1) out with withdrawing hook 140 589 02 33 00. Carefully insert withdrawing hook with the curved face downward to the side between instrument cluster and instrument panel and turn through 90°.. Carefully withdraw hook until it engages on the recess on the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster is held in place by five spring clips attached to the instrument panel (arrows).
- Unscrew speedometer shaft at instrument cluster (A1) (except models 124.034/036).
- Disconnect electrical connections.
- Remove instrument cluster (A1).
- Installation is the reverse of removal procedure, see notes below.

Installation Notes:

Models up to 02/87:
- Push in instrument cluster and at the same time pull speedometer shaft from footwell so that the shaft does not kink behind the instrument cluster.

As of 03/87
- A guide tube has been installed in the area below the instrument cluster to prevent the speedometer shaft from kinking.
