Repair Notes For A/C System and Components

Filling Capacity Model kg
Refrigerant R 12 126.023 1.7
126.033
126.037

1. While evacuating and filling the two air-conditioning systems, the ignition and both systems are simultaneously switched on. The R 12 magnetic valves (36) and (37) are open.
2. During repairs on one of the two refrigerant systems, the fluid reservoir must be replaced (add 10 cc cold-flowing oil).
Owing to the larger volume of the system, a fluid reservoir with a higher moisture holding capacity must be installed (part no.126 830 02 83).
3. Evacuate and recharge system.
4. Both front seats are to be removed when work is performed on the rear passenger compartment air conditioning system.
5. Remove seatbelt buckles for left and right-side front seats.
6. Remove left and right-side angle brackets on front seats below the seat adjustment lever.

7. Adjust seats to extreme forward position to facilitate removal of backrests from their retainers (arrow).
8. Tilt the backrests forward and push the seats to the extreme rear position.

9. Remove screws at the front of the seat guide rails.
10. Push the seats to the front to remove the rear screws from the guide rails.
11. Remove seats.

Checking temperature sensor for rear passenger compartment evaporator:
Ambient temperature °C Nominal value kOhms
15 24 ± 1
25 17 ± 1
35 13 ± 1

12. Pull off 2-pin coupling (38) and check with ohmmeter.

Removing Evaporator Housing For Rear Passenger Cooling System

13. Remove left and right-side air ducts for rear passenger compartment recirculated air (arrow).

14. Remove screws for housing upper section (upper arrow), pull housing toward the front and remove.
15. Remove screws retaining lower section of housing, at level of partition-window lift support (lower arrow).

16. Remove 2 screws from tunnel on left and right sides of lower housing (arrows). Remove housing.
17. Discharge air conditioning system (recycling).

18. Remove hose connections from expansion valve (arrow).
19. Pull off 2-pin coupling for temperature sensor (rear passenger compartment evaporator) and 6-pin coupling for rear compartment fan.

20. Remove screws (arrows) on left and right sides and lever out evaporator housing.

21. Remove screw on upper section of evaporator housing and lever out evaporator.
22. Installation is performed in reverse sequence.

Temperature/Air Volume Control Switch - Removal And Installation:
23. Use a wooden or plastic lever to remove the trim piece (arrow).
24. Pull off its cable coupling and remove the control switch.
25. Installation is performed in reverse sequence.
