Starting System - Restart Delay Relay

REF. NO. 15/45

TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: March 1991 (supersedes S.I. 15/40, Dec. 1989)

SUBJECT:
MODELS 124.030/090, 126.024/025 AND 201.029 WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION NON-REPEAT IGNITION LOCK RELAY

Note:
This S.I. includes additional effective serial numbers and the 201.029 model applicability for the relay.

During May through August 1989, and as of January and April 1990 production, a relay with restart delay has been installed as a large-scale test.

Effective Serial Number Range

The relay causes a 2 second delay between the first and any subsequent starting attempts allowing the flywheel ring gear to come to complete rest, preventing damage to the starter pinion and ring gear teeth.

When repairs are necessary, use the following wiring diagrams. The relay is available as a spare part, but the wiring harness is not available. If the harness becomes defective, repair it if practical, or if beyond repair, remove the re-start delay relay and harness, and connect the wiring as shown in the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual, page 113 model 124, page 105 model 126.

Note:
Vehicles with non-repeat ignition feature can be identified by the relay (Figures 1 to 3).
