Technician Safety Information
91-820 Safety Regulations For Roll-over Bars
A General
The roll-over bar (1) is extended by a tensioned spring (5) via a control module, which actuates a triggering solenoid (Y57/1), which opens a lock according to the following criteria:
Version up to 05/95
- Vehicle inclination > 22 ° Corresponding to 0.4 g (1) (all around) and at least one rear axle switch open (rear axle suspension completely extended)
- Recognition of acceleration > 4 g (1)
Version as of 06/95
- Vehicle inclination > 52 °
- Vehicle acceleration > 3 g (1)
Observe the notes given in section B to avoid accidents when working on the rollover bar system and on the vehicle.
(1) 1 g = 9.81 m/s(2) (acceleration due to gravity)
B Important notes on repair work and following accidents
1 Before starting
a. Body repair work, e.g. floor, tunnel
In addition on version up to 05/95
b. Work on rear axle, e.g. shock absorbers, springs, axle
c. Lifting vehicle onto body straightening bench: the roll-over bar must be extended and the negative pole on the battery disconnected and covered.
For points b) and c) the connectors on both rear axle switches must also be disconnected and the rear axle switches removed (91-860).
2 Repair work
Following repair work on the roll-over bar, e.g. complete or partial removal of roll-over bar, the roll-over bar must be adjusted (91-920).
3
After completion of the work mentioned in points 1 and 2 the system must checked for proper function (roll-over bar must actuate) (91-830).
4 Following accidents
Following an accident it is necessary to replace a number of components under the following conditions:
- Defect in control module
- Recognizable deformation or damage to the control module or rear axle switches
- Defect noted during testing
- Damage to the roll-over bar covering or foam padding beneath or support and actuating elements
- Convenience feature does not function
- Malfunction indicator light does not go out
5 Disposal
To be observed up to 11/92 (VIN IF 075542)
The roll-over bar crash-actuated trigger module contains approx. 1.5 g of mercury. According to the waste disposal laws it must therefore be disposed of in the proper manner (see Section C).
C Disposal of control modules containing mercury up to 11/92 (VIN 1F 075542)
It is prohibited to dispose of components containing mercury together with industrial wastes or as common scrap material. Such components must either be recycled according to the waste disposal laws or disposed of as hazardous wastes.
Workshops which do not have any possibility of recycling components containing mercury can return these parts to the plant in Sindelfingen, department QKT/SAP, Abladestelle 042, within the scope of the part return program.
Warranty and goodwill parts must be marked accordingly.
