SRS Function
The emergency tensioning retractors (front left and right) and airbags (depending on model and equipment) are triggered when a certain acceleration/deceleration is reached within the specified impact angle.
The driver/passenger airbags and driver/passenger emergency tensioning retractors reduce the risk of injury to chest and head in the event of a head-on collision.
In the event of a side collision the side airbags protect primarily the upper body while the advantageous kinematic features also help protect the head.
The front left and right airbags are labeled SRS airbag. On vehicles with side airbags the lettering SRS airbag is also located on the door liners.
Malfunctions in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) are indicated on the instrument panel by the SRS malfunction indicator lamp (A1e15).
On vehicles with front passenger seat Occupied Recognition Sensor (OSR) or front passenger seat Occupied Recognition Sensor with Automatic Child Seat Recognition (ACSR), triggering of the supplemental restraint devices on the passenger side are inhibited under certain conditions.
OSR: When the passenger seat is not occupied the passenger airbag, side airbag and emergency tensioning retractor are not triggered.
ACSR: Upon recognition of a special child seat (MB child seat) on the front passenger seat the passenger airbag is not triggered for safety reasons. The side airbag and emergency tensioning retractor on the passenger side remain active. The function of the system and the passenger airbag switch-off are indicated by the automatic child seat recognition sensor malfunction indicator lamp (E16) or automatic child seat recognition warning lamp (N72e1).The ACSR also includes the OSR functions.
