Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

The engine and transmission are removed as an assembly.
1. Disable airbag system, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove lower engine compartment cover.
3. Support transmission with suitable lifting device, then drain transmission fluid.
4. Remove engine mount on rear transmission cover.
5. Remove lower engine carrier from frame floor, then remove exhaust support.
6. Remove shield plate above propeller shaft intermediate bearing, then loosen propeller shaft clamping nut.
7. Loosen but do not remove propeller shaft intermediate bearing attaching screws.
8. Remove propeller shaft from transmission leaving companion plate on the shaft.
9. Loosen fitted sleeves in universal joint flange, then push companion plate back from universal joint flange.
10. Push propeller shaft toward the rear as far as the intermediate bearing and clamping piece permit.
11. Disconnect exhaust system from rear suspension, lower carefully and suspend with wire.
12. Remove speedometer driveshaft from rear transmission case, then unclip shaft from holder.
13. Disconnect hydraulic line on lefthand side of slave cylinder.
14. Remove clip locks, then disconnect shift rods from intermediate shift levers of floor shift.
15. Remove starter motor attaching bolts.
16. Remove transmission to intermediate flange attaching bolts, removing the upper three bolts last.
17. Turn transmission to the left, then pull towards the rear out of centering dowel pin and clutch plate.
18. Lower and remove transmission. On vehicles with auxiliary heater, make sure water hose is not damaged when removing transmission.
19. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply a light coat of a suitable long term lubricant to centering pin and transmission input shaft prior to installation.
b. Tighten transmission attaching bolts to specifications.
c. Bleed air from hydraulic clutch assembly.
d. Ensure speedometer driveshaft is installed properly.
e. Refill transmission with 1.5 quarts fluid.
