Storing Explosive SRS Components
Airbag, side airbag and emergency tensioning retractor units are required to be stored in conformity with the Second Directive Relating to the Explosives Act dated 17.04.86.Pursuant to this Directive, small quantities of substances and objects may be stored in locked rooms without the need for special storage approval in conformity with the Explosives Act. Pyrotechnic devices of class T1 may be stored on commercial premises only in very limited quantities.
Pursuant to Schedule 6 of the Annex of the Second Explosives Directive the maximum quantities listed here may be stored on commercial premises -subject to certain provisions being observed- without special approval being required on the part of the proper authority:
General Storage Area:
20 kg gross
Secure Area (separate storage area):
200 kg gross
If the storage quantity stated is exceeded, an application is required to be submitted to the competent authority (Factory Inspectorate) for an addition to the quantities stored. It is not permitted to store pyrotechnical objects together with other materials.
General Storage Area
Pyrotechnic devices may be stored in a general storage area -in a workroom- only in a steel cabinet.
The steel cabinet has to satisfy the following requirements:
- Lockable.
- Attached at the installation point.
- Screw connections of the door fittings and attachments not accessible from the outside.
- Installation point protected from the direct rays of the sun.
- Adequate clearance to radiators and other sources of heat.
- Cabinet doors provided with prohibition signs (NO OPEN FLAME and NO SMOKING) and warning sign (EXPLOSIVES).
- Hand fire extinguisher containing at least 6 kg ABC extinguishing powder placed close to the installation point.
Secure Area
A secure area refers to a separate storage area which satisfies the following requirements:
- Walls, ceilings and supporting elements of highly flame-resistant construction materials.
- Windows made of insulating glass or wire-reinforced glass with protective grill.
- Door with safety lock cylinder flush to the outside
- Design of electrical equipment at least conforming to the provisions for moist and wet rooms (VDE 0100 45).
- Door provided with prohibition signs (NO OPEN FLAME and NO SMOKING) and warning sign (EXPLOSIVES)
- Hand fire extinguisher containing at least 6 kg ABC extinguishing powder placed close to the secure area.
