Cold Engine Doesn't Run Smoothly, Cuts Out Again After Starting

Cause/Remedy:

Excessive oil pressure causes the valves to be opened via the hydraulic valve clearance compensation element which have been pushed up, and the engine loses compression.
If peak oil pressures of 20 to 30 bar are achieved when starting engine from cold, the oil pressure control piston with incomplete flat face (arrow, detail A) must be replaced.

As a result of the excessive oil pressure, the metal caps may be pushed up off the ball pins in the valve clearance compensation element (arrow) These compensation elements are fully operational and should not be replaced.
