Rear Suspension
Removal and Installation of Complete Rear AxlePreceding work:
Detach and refit wheels.
Removal and installation of exhaust system from the connector.
Presenting the plates from model 126
Note
The removal and installation of the complete rear axle involves the same sequence of operations on the models 107 and 126.
Vehicles with ASD and HPF:

Note
The hydraulic pressure in the hydraulic unit is to be relieved on vehicles with ASD. Remove rear axle only with wheels removed first to avoid damage to rear axle shaft during transportation of complete units. The sequence of operations when removing and installing is identical on the 107 and 126 Models, any differences being pointed out.
Removal and installation
1. Remove, install exhaust shield.
Note
The tightening torque of the M8 hexagon bolts or hexagon nuts is 25 Nm. Torque wrench 001 589 66 21 00.
2. Remove, install shock absorber Service and Repair or spring strut. Service and Repair
3. Remove, install rear springs. Service and Repair
4. Detach, assemble torsion bar connection on semi-trailing arm or coupled semi-trailing arm.
Arrangement with semi-trailing arm:
Arrangement with coupled semi-trailing arm:
5. Unscrew, screw in both brake hoses and seal brake lines to prevent ingress of dirt.
Note: Bleed brake system.
6. Detach clamping nut of propeller shaft and detach hexagon bolts of the propeller shaft intermediate bearing on frame floor and remove.
Note:
- Clamping nut 30-40 Nm
- Propeller shaft intermediate bearing 25 Nm
- Torque wrench 001 589 66 21 00
- Open end wrench 46 mm 126 589 00 00 00.
7. Detach, assemble propeller shaft at rear axle center piece.
Note:
- Renew self-locking hexagon nuts.
- Tightening torque M10 = 45 Nm; M12 = 60 Nm.
- Torque wrench 001 589 66 21 00.
Note: For reasons of space, the three hexagon bolts for attaching the flexible disc to the joint flange must be assembled from the rear forwards on models 126.03/04 up to about the beginning of October. The bolts can only be screwed in when joint flange is at the level of the rear axle housing as indicated with the arrow.
8. Push propeller shaft forwards out of the centering. Prior to this loosen the fitting sleeves radially out of the joint flange with a suitable mandrel.
Caution: Prevent propeller shaft from falling down with binding wire, e.g. use the two fixing bolts of the exhaust shield (arrows)
9. Remove parking brake compensating lever, detach and assemble cables.
Note: Adjust parking brake.
10. Unscrew, screw in hexagon socket bolt (L6a) and remove speed sensor (L6) from the rear axle housing.
11. Cover the magnetic tooth of speed sensor and opening of rear axle housing.
12. Remove speed sensor line from the clip (L6c) and rubber grommet at rear axle corner. Attach speed sensor to frame floor with binding wire.
Note: Renew self-locking hexagon socket bolt). Tightening torque 8 Nm. Check 0-ring (36) for damage and renew if required. Ensure that there are no metallic residues present on the magnetic tooth. Ensure leads are routed properly. Check oil level and replenish to level of the oil filler opening.
Vehicle with ASD
13. Detach HS line on the hose connector at the level of the rubber bearing and provide connections with suitable rubber plugs.
Note: Check line connection for leakage and hose is correctly routed. Bleed hydraulic system. Remove ASD control unit and bridge terminals 8 and 10. Allow engine to idle and open bleed screw until no air bubbles escape.
14. Slip vehicle jack top (1165891061 00) with vehicle jack or a pit lift under the rear axle and lift up to stop.
15. Unscrew, screw in supporting plate of the front rubber bearings to frame floor (arrows).
Note: Tighten up hexagon bolts of rubber bearing to 120 Nm and hexagon bolts (M10) of supporting plate to 40 Nm. Torque wrenches 001 589 66 21 00, 001 589 67 21 00.
16. Unscrew, screw in rear rubber bearing on frame floor (arrows).
Note: Tightening torque of hexagon bolts is 30 Nm. Basically hexagon bolts and threaded brackets should be renewed after one-time use. Torque wrench 001 589 66 21 00.
Vehicles with ASR
17. Carefully lower rear axle sufficiently until there is access for detaching the self-locking hexagon socket bolts of the speed sensors (L6/3,L6/4).Do not subject the lines to tensile loads. Unscrew, screw in hexagon socket bolt (arrows) and remove the speed sensors (L6/3, L6/4) from the rear axle housing. Cover magnetic tooth and put to one side.
Arrangement of righthand speed sensor with angled exit (L6/4):
Note: Renew self-locking hexagon socket bolts. Check 0-ring (L6/4b) for damage and renew if required. Ensure that there are no metallic residues on the magnetic tooth. Check the spacer shim for correct seating (L6/4c). Check oil level and replenish, if required.
Arrangement of lefthand speed sensor with straight exit (L6/3):
18. Carefully lower rear axle.
Caution: When lowering and transporting rear axle do not damage cover plates of brake discs.
19. Unscrew, screw in rear rubber bearing on rear axle carrier.
Note: Check rubber bearing for damage and renew, if required. Tightening torque of hexagon bolts is 120 Nm. Torque wrench 001 589 67 21 00.
Arrangement of right-hand kidney-shaped rubber bearing (1h):
20. Check front rubber bearing on the rear axle carrier for damage and renew, if required.
21. Check rubber stop on frame floor for damage. Renew damaged rubber stop (arrow).
22. Installation takes place in the reverse sequence.
23. Check position of semi-trailing arm.
24. Check Headlamp adjustment.
