ABS/ASR General System Description

Four wheel ABS, Fig. 3, uses a control unit, hydraulic actuator and wheel speed sensors to control brake fluid pressure and prevent wheel lock during severe braking conditions. With this system, directional stability is improved and steering is maintained even during braking on wet, sandy, snowy or icy road conditions.
Acceleration Slip Control (ASR) compliments ABS system. ABS prevents wheel lock-up during braking whereas ASR prevents wheel spin caused by acceleration, resulting in better traction. basic ABS components are supplemented by an expanded hydraulic unit, Fig. 6, a charging pump, a fourth wheel speed sensor and a more comprehensive electronic system.
