Removal and Replacement

The engine and transmission are removed as an assembly.
1. Disable airbag system as described in Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems), Service Precautions. Also refer to Service and Repair, Arming and Disarming.
2. Raise hood to a 90° angle.
3. Loosen noise suppressor lining attaching screws, then remove lining from under vehicle.
4. Completely drain cooling system.
5. Remove air hose and air cleaner cover.
6. Remove radiator from vehicle.
7. Carefully discharge refrigerant from A/C system, then disconnect and cap refrigerant lines, if so equipped.
8. On models with level control, loosen level control pressure oil pump attaching bolts. Refer to Fig. 3, for pressure oil pump bolt locations, then remove pump and position aside. Do not disconnect pressure line.
9. Drain fluid from power steering pump, then disconnect and cap pump lines.
10. While pushing on angle lever slotted guide piece, disconnect and remove bowden wire.
11. Mark, disconnect and/or cap all electrical connectors, vacuum lines oil and fuel lines from engine assembly.
12. Remove engine mount to crossmember attaching bolts.
13. Remove engine mount stop attaching bolts, then the engine stop.
14. Remove two lower starter motor attaching screws, then disconnect bracket and tachometer drive and position aside. Remove ground strap from engine and/or transmission assembly.
15. Disconnect RPM sensor from oil pan, if so equipped.
16. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
17. Loosen lateral exhaust system support attaching bolts, then swivel exhaust pipe bracket downward.
18. Disconnect driveshaft from transmission, then remove slide piece and intermediate bearing bracket attaching screws. Slide driveshaft rearward as far as possible.
19. Remove heat guide plate from vehicle floor, if necessary.
20. Disconnect tachometer cable from transmission rear cover.
21. Disconnect clutch master cylinder to slave cylinder oil line.
22. Remove shift rods from transmission shift levers.
23. Install suitable engine lifting equipment onto engine lifting eyes.
24. Remove rear engine crossmember and rear engine mount.
25. Remove both front engine carrier mount attaching bolts.
26. Gradually lift engine and transmission assembly from vehicle.
27. Reverse procedure to install.
