EMPTYING AND FILLING PRESSURE OIL SYSTEM

Model 124 Station Wagon With Level Control System On Rear Axle

Emptying pressure Oil System

Oil drain hose:
connect, disconnect at oil drain plug (3p) on level control unit (3).

Oil drain plug (3p):
open slowly, collecting the oil in a clean container. Retighten oil drain plug (3p), 14 Nm.

Filling Oil Pressure System

Oil reservoir (2):
fill hydraulic oil into oil reservoir (2) using funnel 126 589 12 63 00, until oil level is between the "min" and "max" marks on the oil dipstick.

Connecting rod (7):
remove, install at lever on level control unit and set lever on level control unit to "fill" position. Replace self-locking hex. nut, 11 Nm.

Engine:
start and allow to run at medium speed for approx. 30 seconds. Then turn off engine. Note information in item 7.

Oil level:
check oil reservoir. The oil level must be between the "min" and "max" marks when engine is not running.

Total capacity of system approx. 2.0L

PROCEDURE

Emptying Oil Pressure System

1 Put oil drain hose (061) on oil drain plug (3p) on level control unit.

2 Slowly open oil drain plug (3p) on level control unit and catch oil (approx. 0.5L) in a clean container. Retighten oil drain plug, 14 Nm.

3 Use funnel with screen (060) to add oil to oil reservoir (2).

Note:
Re-use clean oil only.

Filling Pressure Oil System

4 Check oil level in oil reservoir (2) and top off if required. The oil level should be approximately at the maximum marking (a) for filling the system when the spring struts are empty.

5 Set lever on level control unit to "fill" position and allow engine to run at medium speed for approximately 30 seconds.

If connecting rod is fitted: Allow engine to run at medium speed for about 1 minute. During the filling process, load the rear of the vehicle with approximately 120 kg in the trunk or keep pressed down so that the level control unit is set to "fill".

6 Engage connecting rod (7) in lever of level control unit and tighten new self-locking hex. nut (7a), 10 Nm.

Model 124 in bore "b"

7 Check oil level in oil reservoir (2) when engine is not running and correct if necessary. When the system is operational the oil level should be between the "max" and "min" marks in the ready-to-drive condition. It the vehicle is fully laden the oil level is below the "min" mark (no longer visible on dipstick).

Note:
Only use approved hydraulic oils.

Caution!
If, during repair work the oil reservoir has been emptied or the tandem pump replaced or the high pressure expanding hose unscrewed, the pump must be bled.

For this operation, when the engine is running press the lever of the level control unit into "Emptying" or "Neutral" position to ensure the oil returns to the oil reservoir (this is already the case on a raised vehicle). If no oil is supplied to the oil reservoir on ASD vehicles, also keep the high pressure expanding hose disconnected at the steel line in a container until the escaping oil is free from bubbles. Then repeat steps 4 - 7.
