Power Interrupt Connector/Switch: Description and Operation

Vehicles shipped overseas from a German North Sea port are equipped with a battery disconnection switch in the trunk on the negative terminal of the battery as of approx. 06/93. This battery disconnection switch interrupts the connection to ground preventing quiescent current loads from discharging the battery during transport or longer periods of inoperation.

NOTE: Do not switch battery disconnection switch to "Off" position with engine running. Interruption of the circuit with the engine running can lead to extensive damage to the vehicle electrical system.
Such damage is not covered by the warranty and will be not be honored as a guarantee claim under any circumstances.

Before interrupting the circuit with the battery disconnection switch, lock vehicle manually or with infrared remote control with trunk lid open. Retract the trunk lid grip by actuating the switch on the trunk lock.

NOTE: The pin in the trunk lid auxiliary lock should not be extended, if necessary repeat locking procedure.

NOTE: On vehicles without switch (as of approx. 01/95) retract grip manually with lever 1 and switch off closing assist with switch 2.

The battery disconnection switch must be removed before delivering the vehicle to the customer.

After removing perform following work:
Code radio.
Code auto pilot system (APS) if present.
Synchronize power windows.
Set timer for stationary heater, where applicable.
On vehicles with ADS reactivate steering angle sensor.

Return of the removed battery disconnection switches is only planned for countries participating in the ZVL Germersheim replacement part return program. Information on return shipment is available through parts channels. In all other countries scrap the battery disconnection switches.
