A) Control Arm Bushing R & R

A. ALL MODEL 140, REPLACEMENT OF FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM REAR BUSHINGS WITH HYDRAULIC BUSHINGS

As of June 1992 production (model year 1993), only hydraulic bushings (B, Figure 1) are installed in the rear mount of the front lower control arm.

A. Solid rubber bushing (4c) with large washer (4d) up to June 1992.

B. Hydraulic bushing (4g) as of June 1992 (model year 1993).

Note:








On vehicles up through chassis end no. 086003, the solid rubber bushings (4c, Figure 2) with the large washer (4d) should be replaced with hydraulic bushings (Figure 3). Both left and right front lower control arm solid rubber rear bushings should be replaced at the same time. Before starting procedure, check if hydraulic bushing (4g, Figure 3) with integral washer may have already been installed, in which case no further replacement is necessary.

1. Version up to June 1992. Rear rubber bushing (4C) With removable washer (4d) installed in the front lower control arm.

Only hydraulic bushings (4g, Figure 3) are available as replacement parts.

2. Version as of June 1992 (model year 1993). Hydraulic bushing (4g) with integral washer installed in the front lower control arm.

Retrofitting hydraulic bushings:

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.





2. Remove engine compartment lower encapsulation panels (arrows, Figure 4).

3. Remove front springs using spring compressor, special tool no. 000 589 46 31 00, and spring plates, special tool no. 140 589 07 63 00. Refer to SMS Job No. 32-200 B.

CAUTION!
Observe all safety precautions when working with steel coil springs. Do not use impact wrench on spring compressor tool or bushing removal/installation tool.





4. Remove eccentric bolts (19 and 20). Always use new nuts (19b and 20b) during reassembly.

Note:
The eccentric bolt nuts should only be retightened when the weight of the vehicle is resting on the front wheels.

Tightening torque: 150 N-m.





5. Pull the control arm free from the crossmember and hold it down with a spacer block made for this purpose (013, Figure 6).





6. Drive the aluminum end washer from the rear rubber bushing with a suitable tool (Figure 7).





7. Remove the rear solid rubber bushing with remover/installer, special tool no. 140 589 11 43 00, (012, Figure 8).

CAUTION! Do not use an impact wrench to remove or install the hydraulic bushing.

Special tool note:

Use remover/installer, special tool no. 140 589 11 43 00, for removal and installation of the control arm bushings.

The previous remover/installer, special tool no. 140 589 03 43 00, can still be used when equipped with update kit, special tool no. 140 589 11 43 25. See S.I. MBNA 33/5, 58/56 (July 1992) for complete information on use of this tool.








8. Coat hydraulic bushing with a thin layer of installation lubricant, part no. 001 989 14 51, and install into control arm with the offset indentation (arrows, Figures 9 and 10) horizontally aligned with the welding seam of the control arm, pointing toward the ball joint/outside of the vehicle (A, Figure 10).

CAUTION!
Do not use an impact wrench to remove or install the hydraulic bushing.

9. Install the hydraulic bushing (4g, Figure 10) into the control arm evenly, without letting it twist, to the stop on the collar in the front lower control arm. Do not use excessive force.





10. After installation of the hydraulic bushings and reinstallation of the control arms and springs, adjust the wheel bearing play to 0.01 mm (see SMS Job No. 33-0300) and then check and, if necessary, adjust the vehicle's front wheel alignment (see SMS Job No. 40-0320. For newest front wheel alignment data, see S.I. 40/115, June 1992).

Note:
Rechecking vehicle height and headlight aim is not required after reinstalling the original springs.
