Injury Hazard When Working on Airbag or ETR Units
- Airbag units are pyrotechnic (explosive) devices.
- Testing and installation may only be carried out or supervised by specially trained personnel.
- Before the airbag and seat belt tensioner units are installed it is essential that the battery be unclipped, the negative terminal and its clamp be masked, and the test coupling/plug connector (12-pin X11/7, X11/13) be disconnected.
- Installation should take place immediately after the units have been taken out of storage, without delay.
- If work should be interrupted and the airbag and seat belt tensioner units are not yet installed they should be locked up. Under no circumstances may they be left unsupervised.
- Airbag and seat belt tensioner units should not be treated with grease cleaning or similar agents.
- Airbag and seat belt tensioner units should not be exposed to temperatures in excess of 100°C (212°F).
- Airbag and seat belt tensioner units which have been dropped from a height in excess of than 0.5 M (1.6 ft.) may no longer be installed in a vehicle.
- Airbag and seat belt tensioner units should only be electrically tested by means of stipulated testing devices when installed in vehicle.
WARNING: Airbag units must always be stored with the cushioned side facing up! If the gas generator is accidentally ignited with the airbag (cushioned side) facing down the entire unit is propelled forcibly upwards, creating the possibility of injury.
