CAN Data Bus

DATA EXCHANGE VIA SERIAL DATA BUS (CAN)

The engine control module (N3/4), electronic accelerator control module (N4/1) or cruise control/idle speed control module (N4/3), as well as the diagnostic module (N59) in California version vehicles are linked by a serial data bus (CAN).

CAN = Controller Area Network

The control modules are networked in parallel via two wires. As a result, the need for redundant sensors as well as control module inputs/outputs has been eliminated.

Data exchange occurs continuously in the form of information blocks. Transmissions from one control module are received by the other control modules and vice versa. Control modules only interpret that information which is required by that particular control module. Important data is transmitted with priority.
