Automatic Recognition of Vehicle Equipment and Version
The engine control module (N3/4) recognizes and stores the following vehicle information during initial operation:
- Manual/automatic transmission,
- Catalyst/non-catalyst version,
- Catalyst temperature element (Japan only),
- Federal/California version (USA only),
- 4-speed/5-speed automatic transmission,
- Electronic accelerator or cruise control/idle speed control actuator,
- ASR.
This recognition feature reduces the number of control module versions needed worldwide. After replacement or trial installation of an engine control module from another vehicle, the stored data must be erased and the recognition feature must be reactivated (see "Resetting and Reactivating ECM Memory"). If the engine control module is not reset and reactivated, fuel injection and ignition system problems may occur.
