REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF REAR AXLE SPRING STRUTS

Preceding work: Pressure oil system emptied. Procedures

Model 124 Station Wagon





Version B (Model 124 Station Wagon)

Loading area cover:
remove, install

Warning!
The vehicle must be on its wheels or the spring link must be supported.

Self-locking hex. bolt (5g):
unbolt, bolt in, 25 Nm. Replace self-locking bolt (5g).

Washer (5i), upper rubber mount (5c):
remove, install.

Vehicle:
raise, lower.

Pressure line (P4):
ensure correct routing (item 8). Use new solid copper sealing rings (5v).
M12 x 1.5 = 25 Nm
M14 x 1.5 = 30 Nm

Hex. bolt (72d):
unbolt, bolt in. Replace, put on spring link cover (72c).

Self-locking hex. nuts (5n):
remove, screw on, 60 Nm. Replace self-locking nuts (5n). Unscrew, screw in hexagon bolts and washers (5r).

Spring strut (5):
remove, install. Remove, refit lower rubber mount (5d). Check for correct installation.

Note:
The spring struts are also the rebound stop for the rear wheels. Therefore only detach the upper mounting when the vehicle is on its wheels or the spring link is supported.

If the spring strut tube also rotates when tightening the nuts, hold it firmly in the wheelhouse. A flat open box wrench (WAF 17 and approx. 5 mm thick) is required to loosen the hex. lock nut.

Removal, Installation

Model 124 Station Wagon





1 Remove cover (70a) of loading surface.

2 Unscrew hex. self-locking bolt (5g), remove washer (5i) and upper rubber mount (5c).

Installation Note:
Replace self-locking hexagon bolt, 25 Nm.

3 Raise vehicle at rear axle.





4 Disconnect pressure line (P4) at the connection of the steel line to pressure hose and seal hose connections with suitable plugs.

Installation Note:
Replace solid copper sealing rings. M16 x 1.5 = 30 Nm.

Check line connections for leaks.





5 Unbolt two hex. bolts (arrows) and remove spring link cover (72c).





6 Unscrew hex. self-locking nuts (5n), remove bolts and washers.

Installation Note:
Replace hex. self-locking nuts 60 Nm.





7 Press spring strut (5) out downwards from the locating bore in the frame floor. Remove spring strut from the spring link and remove rearwards.

Installation Note:
Check mounting parts and protective rubber cover of spring strut. Replace spring strut (5) if necessary.

8 Check attachment parts.





Note:
The banjo bolts (B) for attaching the pressure line to the accumulator and spring strut should be checked for cracks in the area of the stem (arrow).





9 Install in reverse sequence.
