Component network (CAN bus between IRCL control module/HFM-SFI, EIFI or ME engine control module)

Component network (PWM bus between IRCL control module/EDFI control module)

All of the doors, the trunk lid and tank flap can be locked and unlocked centrally with the infrared remote control.

The infrared remote central locking (IRCL) receiver module (A26/7) is located on the interior mirror.
Point the transmitter output of the remote control at the infrared remote central locking (IRCL) receiver module on the interior mirror (A26/7) and press the remote control button. When the vehicle locks the red indicator lamps in the infrared remote central locking (IRCL) receiver module on the interior mirror (A26/7) and in the driver's door handle (E34 or E34/1 not for (USA) (J) ) flash. When the vehicle is unlocked the green indicator lamps flash. Remote control is possible up to a distance of approx. 6 m when the remote control batteries are fully charged.

If the red and green indicator lamps on the infrared remote central locking (IRCL) receiver module on the interior mirror (A26/7) and driver's door handle E34 or E34/1 not for (USA)(J) flash simultaneously for approx. 30s during the locking or unlocking operation, replace the batteries in the remote control as soon as possible.

Closing side windows and tilting/sliding roof
Continue to hold remote control button down after locking. After approx. two seconds the side windows and tilting/sliding roof start to close. The remote control range for this function is less than for locking and unlocking for safety reasons.

The batteries can also be checked as follows:

Hold remote control button depressed for longer than one second; if battery indicator lamp at the transmitter output comes on momentarily, the batteries are o.k.

If the indicator lamp does not come on momentarily, replace the batteries.

NOTE: Changing the battery should not take longer than approx. 1 min., otherwise it is necessary to resynchronize the remote control signal.

!
Watch the closing operation to ensure that no one is injured by pinching.

In the event of danger release the remote control button - the closing operation is interrupted immediately.

Press remote control button again and hold down - side windows and tilting/sliding roof open again.

The tilting/sliding roof opens again only when it was not completely closed previously.

The remote control for the infrared remote central locking (IRCL) interior mirror (A26/7) can be used to control the central locking (CL), convenience feature (CF), anti-theft alarm system (ATA) as well as the trunk lid remote control (TRC) (USA) via the infrared remote central locking (IRCL) receiver module.

Moreover the infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54) affects the engine control module for realisation of the drive authorization system.

NOTE: If the side windows and tilting/sliding roof cannot be closed with the infrared remote control, it is necessary either to change the batteries or synchronize the system.

The infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54) is available in two versions:
- CAN version (Controller Area Network)
- PWM version (pulse width modulation)

The engine control or fuel supply is inhibited by the infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54). The IRCL control module (N54) is connected to the engine control module via a CAN data bus or PWM connection. When the engine control is inhibited (vehicle locked with IRCL), the engine control module prevents the injection system from operating.

The drive authorization system can only be activated and deactivated with the IRCL. Locking and unlocking the vehicle with the mechanical key has no affect on the drive authorization system. The ATA remains active on vehicles locked with the IRCL. (Only (USA), (J) with key)

If the engine does not start when cranked and the red and green indicator lamps in the interior mirror flash alternately for approx. 30s, lock and unlock the vehicle again with the remote control.

NOTE: (CAN data bus only)
The infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54) and engine control module are permanently allocated to one another by an identification code. This identification cannot be erased. This means that it is not possible to use an infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54) or engine control module from another vehicle for testing

Function
The infrared remote central locking can only be operated with the remote control for the specific vehicle, because the remote control is matched to the infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54).

The remote control transfers the signal in the form of an infrared beam of light to the infrared remote central locking (IRCL) receiver module (A26/7). The IRCL receiver module (A26/7) receives the light beam, filters out extraneous light, amplifies the signal and transfers it to the infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54) via a control line.

If the remote control is actuated outside of the reception range, the current signal in the remote control changes, however not in the infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54). When the remote control is used again in the reception range, the signal transmitted from the remote control no longer corresponds to that expected by the control module. However since the control module can count up 250 additional switching operations, it automatically resets itself to the current signal. If the remote control is actuated more than 250 times outside of the reception range, the transmitter must be resynchronized.

The signal consists of a fixed code which is coded in addition by a computer. This additional coding changes each time it is actuated making decoding of tile signal impossible. The infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54) decodes the signal received and actuates tile central lacking if the fixed code is correct. Simultaneously the control module resets itself to the next signal and inhibits the previous signal.

Synchronizing central locking
If the vehicle cannot be locked or unlocked, synchronization of the system is necessary.
For this purpose point the remote control at the infrared remote central locking (IRCL) receiver module (A26/7) on the interior mirror and momentarily press the remote control button twice. Then switch on the ignition within 30 s.

The central locking is then again ready for operation.

Desynchronization
If a remote control key is lost, the infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54) can be desynchronized (alternating part of code reset).

This means that when a remote control key is lost, it is only necessary to replace the mechanical locks.

Desynchronization is possible with the hand-held tester (HHT). Desynchronization of the IRCL control module is menu-guided.

After desynchronization any other remote control keys still present must be resynchronized.

NOTES: When an infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54) is replaced it is necessary to perform version coding with the hand-held tester (HHT).

Version coding is menu-guided.

Universal infrared remote central locking control modules (IRCL)(N54) with part no.210 820 27 26 and 210 820 28 26 can be used to replace the IRCL control modules (N54) with part nos. 210 820 21 26 and 210 820 22 26.

Coding possibilities:
- Vehicle model
- Convenience feature (CF)
- Trunk lid remote control (TRC) (USA)
- Lock convenience switch polling ( (USA), (J) )

The remote control keys for the infrared central locking have a number on the inside (battery compartment).

Up to 8 remote control keys for one lock system can be recognized and checked for registration by the hand-held tester. Moreover it is possible to check the battery state as well as synchronization of the individual remote control keys. The HHT also indicates the number of the current remote control key (remote control key used last). Moreover it is indicated whether the infrared remote central locking control module (IRCL) (N54) is permanently assigned to the vehicle. Polling of the actual values is menu-controlled.

Using the hand held tester, the infrared remote control key can be irrevocably blocked. Blocking of certain infrared remote control keys is carried out by menu control. The irrevocable blocking of a certain infrared remote control key should only be carried out at the express wish of the customer if a key has been lost.

The spare infrared remote control key (2) is the size of a credit card. The spare key can be used to operate the central locking and the ATA. In addition, the infrared remote signal activates or deactivates the drive authorization system. Actuation of the convenience feature is not possible. The spare infrared remote control key (2) contains an infrared transmitter, a push-button for actuation (b), an LED (a) for checking the battery condition, a battery compartment with two batteries and a mechanical master key (d). The infrared beam is emitted from the center of the front side of the spare infrared remote control key when the push-button (b) is pressed.

NOTE: If necessary, the mechanical master key (d) can be replaced by a mechanical auxiliary key available from the central supply depot ZVL Germersheim. The lock cylinders in the trunk and glove box cannot be locked or unlocked with the mechanical auxiliary key. This means that the customer still has the common advantages during a hotel or workshop stay.

Spare infrared remote control keys are stamped on the rear side with a code (in this case 3).

In order to change the two batteries (f), the battery compartment cover (c) must be removed from the spare infrared remote control key (2). This is done by pressing the locking plate (see arrow). The type of batteries to be used is identical to that in the infrared remote control key.
