Inspect Cylinders For Leaks
Inspect Cylinders For Leaks
Shown On Engine 111:
Shown on engine 604-406:
Remove/Install
NOTE: On Engine 604 to 606 the pressure loss can be checked through the bore of the injection nozzle or the glow plug.
1 Bring engine to operating temperature (approx. 80 degrees C)
DANGER:
- Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant.
- Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 degrees C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage bottles.
- Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and eye protection.
2 Open expansion reservoir or radiator end cover (2)
NOTE:
- At cap with detent: Rotate cap anticlockwise to detent 1, release pressure relief, then continue turning cap to detent 2.
- On 2-stage end cover: Rotate 2-stage-end cover half a turn anticlockwise, release pressure, then unscrew end cover.
3 Remove spark plugs (19)
4 Remove injection nozzles
5 Remove glow plugs
6 Fix scale of degrees (6) at vibration damper.
- Engine 604, 605, 606
NOTE: Hang up scale of degrees at pin of vibration damper.
7 Position piston of cylinder to be tested to ignition TDC
- rotate engine at crankshaft.
- Piston in top dead center on marking number at vibration damper of:
- Engine 604: top dead center cylinder 1 and 4, 180 degrees cylinder 2 and 3
- Engine 605: top dead center cylinder 1, 72 degrees cylinder 2, 144 degrees cylinder 4, 216 degrees cylinder 5, 288 degrees cylinder 3
- Engine 606: top dead center cylinder 1 and 6, 120 degrees cylinder 2 and 4, 240 degrees cylinder 3 and 5
8 Connect cylinder leak tester (04)
Inspect
9 Pressurize cylinder with compressed air and read off pressure loss at tester (04)
NOTE:
- If pressure loss has increased, determine cause.
- If crankshaft rotates, Install retaining lock for crankshaft
10 Carry out test of the other cylinders in the firing order of the engine
11 Install in the reverse order.
