DATE: February 1996

(Supercedes S.I. MBNA 82/86C, Nov. 1995)

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

Revision:
Installation of a modified illumination control module (N7-1).

SUBJECT:
MODEL 210
REPLACEMENT OF ILLUMINATION CONTROL MODULE (N7-1) TO PREVENT SIMULTANEOUS OPERATION OF FOGLAMPS AND HIGH BEAMS

This S.I applies to the models shown as of MY 1996

Effective Serial Number

Due to foglamp regulations in the state of Virginia, the fog lamp system for affected model 210 vehicles (refer to table shown for effective serial number range) registered in the State of Virginia, must be modified to prevent simultaneous operation of highbeams and fog lamps.

A modified illumination control module (consisting of the exterior lamp switch, fuses for exterior lamps, bulb failure monitor and ATA relay) is now available to prevent simultaneous operation of highbeams and fog lamps.

The modification in the control module consists of a software change, which makes the new module pin compatible with the previous version illumination control module.

Please discard previously issued Work Instructions and Service Informations regarding this subject.

Note:
This modification applies to vehicles in dealer inventory produced prior to January 1996 which were not previously modified (by the addition of 3 relays). Vehicles produced as of January 1996 are equipped with the modified illumination control module.

Procedure:

1. Disconnect and cover battery ground cable (refer to SMS job no. AR54. 10-0003A).

2. Remove driver's side underdash panel (refer to SMS job no. AR68.10-1500F).

3. Remove fuse access cover (1, Figure 1).

4. Remove screws (3, 5, Figure 1).

5. Disconnect the 4 harness connectors from the illumination control module.

6. Reconnect the harness connectors to the modified module.

7. Install the module into the dash, and reinstall the fuse access cover and underdash panel.

8. Reconnect battery ground cable, code radio and reset clock.

9. Test function:

^ Start engine.

^ Turn on both low and high beams.

^ Turn on front fog lamps. The fog lamps should NOT light.

^ Turn off the high beams. The fog lamps should now be lit. The lamp failure indicator lamp should NOT illuminate at any time.

Parts Information

Note:
As of January 1996 production, the modified version illumination control module (refer to parts table) has been phased into production for all model 210 vehicles sold in the United States. Only the modified version module will be stocked at the PDC's.
