Engine - Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch: Description and Operation

Position
In cylinder head between cyls. 3 + 4 or cyls. 4 + 5, respectively

Design

B11/4 - 2 Pin:

B11/4 - 4 Pin:

Metal housing with 2 separate NTC resistors. 4-pin connector.

Assignment of contacts at connector:
Contacts 1 and 4 IFI control module (N3/7) or DFI control module (N3/8)
Contacts 2 and 3 Instrument cluste

Task
Detecting coolant temperature and supplying signal to IFI control module (N3/7) or DFI control module (N3/8) and as of 12/94 to the instrument cluster

Function
The NTC resistor integrated in the coolant temperature sensor (B11/4) alters its electrical resistance in line with the coolant temperature. NTC means negative temperature coefficient, i.e. the electrical resistance drops as the temperature rises.
